View Full Version : Was archery tweaked?

Since the release of GSIV, I've been hunting frost giants and titans, and it seems in the last few weeks their DS has gone up 20 - 30 points.

Also, I was able to take out titans in one shot to the eye about 90% of the time. As well as taking out a giants leg in two shots tops. I was just wondering what they changed any why.

The main thing that changed was crit rank calculations. They used to be getting values higher than rank 9 which resulted in a LOT more death crits than you should have been getting.

But the short answer is yes something changed, no it wasn't directly related to archery, but general combat mechanics.

The last two times I've been hunting has been extremely difficult. The DS pushdown from ambushing was helping me a lot, but now that their DS has been raised I'm doing piddly damage. It takes 4 - 5 shots to sever their leg even. And at 8 seconds a shot from hiding, it's not much fun.

Giants are a very tough prey in GS4. They have lots of Hps and even nasty armor (I know the trolls in that area wear hauberk). Coupled with their ability to blast you with a bolt and smack you with a hard AS, they also are very good at detecting. Believe you me, you're not the only rogue up there having a tough time.

I was tearing through them at level 33 and 34, now suddenly they're a pain in the ass. I guess I'll browse around the official boards to see exactly what they changed and why it is effecting me so much.

I can put bolts and arrows through the eye of any glacier denizen 85 percent of the time, without being revealed from hiding.

5 second rt for Bow. I was disappointed. I thought they'd be a little more difficult.

Why are you aiming for the leg?

They have eyes, you know.

ThisOtherKingdom

Well, I wasn't critting the giants with the eyes a few levels ago, I wasn't getting high enough end rolls. So I'd have to knock them down first and THEN go for the eyes/neck. I haven't tried again yet, but my AS being 295 and their DS now around 225 my first shot from hiding, it ain't workin' well.

What type of bow are you using?

Also, if they aren't get your arrows e-bladed. It's much better.

I have a 4x longbow and master fletched e-bladed arrows.

Well, it was fun for about a month. I'll guess I'll just go back to never hunting like in GS3.

Frost giants aren't the same as they were in GS3 and as such, they had a huge increase in their training level.

Yeah, I know. I never said I was hunting them in GS3.

try out corpses TOJ, Elrodin started there at 28 and hasnt left... course i have been 34 for nearly a year now... They are really soft in the eyes and legs.

I don't think I should have to underhunt corpses, I'm level 35. Plus I don't hunt undead. It's just frustrating. Two levels ago, I was killing the titans in 1 or 2 shots. Now it's taking me 6 - 8 shots.

In GS3, being 3x picking/disarming left me a little undertrained in hunting skills. Now I'm fully trained in all of the hunting skills I need (2x ranged/ambush, 3x hiding/perc) and it is still difficult. Whatever they changed, I don't like it.

Oh, thought you were younger, hit up Kiramon. They are nice easy targets. They dont swarm so it gives you plenty of time to fire and stance.

Also, are you using the same techniques, ie. did you used to shoot from hiding but now shoot from open? did you switch from crossbow to bow?

I was an edged user in GS3 who couldn't afford to train in CM.

As an archer, I try to shoot from hiding every time, which takes me 8 seconds with a longbow.

8 seconds?? Esh. You have something wrong there pal.

Granted, dwarves have a slightly lower roundtime, but it only takes him 3 from hiding.. 4 if aiming.. 5 if no strength on because he is not fully trained for his brig.

8 seconds? Esh.

well part of the problem could be training... what prof/race are you? were there any changes from when you were first hunting the glacier with archery compared to now, as in hunting styles?

Even as an elf i shoot a longbow from hiding in about 5 seconds

My roundtime from hiding with her longbow is 7 seconds, and that's with my ranger being a halfling and without strength. With strength it's about 4 or 5 seconds and that's fine by me.

common misception is that as an archer you dont need strength. every +10 bonus in it gives you -1 rt. but that wouldnt be the reason that TOK is missing his shots. that could have to do with spells that have been cast(depending on his profession), the ranks of perception and ambush, and what type of weapon, ie a crossbow has a bonus to aiming naturally.

Ok, skills dont look like they are the problem. Im guessing that something might have been tweaked with the giants, most likely something wasnt updated properly with the level conversion and they just now got to it which is what the DS boost might be. I still suggest Kiramon for someone of your train. If you use a crossbow they fall nicely.

Your strength stat is most likely the reason you have such a high RT. What kind of armor are you in?

Elven rogue archer with a longbow. Five seconds open or don't stay hidden, six if I stay hidden and seven if I aim.

his shooting stats are correct, 7 sec rt base for a longbow -1 for ST bonus, so thats 6 base, from hiding aimed is 8. That is just as he said. But according to him the problem isnt the RT, its the way the arrows are hitting. His aiming has been off lately.

Ok. Don't know why I was focusing on RT so much.

It takes my archer about four arrows to bring down a greater ice giant. They are one level above her. Normally she hunts undead so not really sure what it would have been before. She will sweep (if she can) and aim for the eye. Those normally take two arrows if she's lucky. Maybe giants are just harder overall?

takes me 1-2 arrows for a corpse and 2 bolts tops for a kiramon. works well for me.

Alright, here's a little log of me hunting. It takes me 19 arrows to kill two frost giants and one titan. Notice how often I came out of hiding even though I'm 3x. Anyway, I was wondering if it is just my imagination that something is wrong, or if hunting is meant to be this way. Observe.

try Kiramon or Shan. They are a bit easier for archers it seems.

or use a crossbow

a crossbow in that situation is dangerous. I would suggest not using a crossbow if the creatures swarm with more than 1 or 2 in a room. Sometimes creatures are just very perceptive, most undead are, some living are. That is most likely why you kept being pulled from hiding. The aiming will come and go with accuracy, some days your on, some your off. Just have to learn to live with it. That has never changed since i started an archer that i can remember.

Giants are.. giants and as such have tons of blood. Crits are completely random now and it looks as though you randomly got hosed.

At your level, I would be on Teras hunting in the village or kiromen... but that's me.

I say find a different creature. Giants have too much blood to nickel and dime them to death. Like it was stated before. If you insist on staying on the glacier find someone attuned to fire to eblade for you.

Least I'm not the only one that's demented. I used to laugh to myself when I would hunt cockatrices. Skin and search were just the icing.

I was thinking about how much blood a giant had. Think I stopped counting at around 250 on your frost giant and it still wasn't dead. I know it can be frustrating.
