Crossposted from the official boards. Someone want to tell Shimmerain?

IOI: 5

Have you been longing to rejoin the uncultured swine, but had your culture holding you back? Well, stay cultured no longer!

All players may now hide their culture using the SHOWCULTURE flag. If you would like to hide your culture from display to other players, simply type SET SHOWCULTURE OFF. StormFront users may also uncheck the "Display Culture" checkbox in the Advanced menu of StormFront's options.

In addition, as a result of this and the Neimhean update, the ability of all characters to choose their culture has been reset. Be sure to choose wisely, as the choice may only be made once.

HOLY FUCKING AWESOME!!!
And how did you know how much it pissed me off, Nilandia?
To be so obviously Dhe'nar when nothing in his appearance to another player except the title gave that info, really pissed me off.
Everyone should just stop wearing their culture titles. It's more supprising and fun to read into a characters appearance and actions to be told where they're from.
I think telling people your culture through your title assumes I (the character) understands the signs of their heritage. Like someone having 'a cloak with ancient runes of death and pain stiched to the hem' and that would assume your character has decyphered the runes already.
This is a good change and I'm stoked.

A good change. This means that I now have a reason to degrade someone to the point where they just turn the damned thing off.

Just turned my "Faendryl flag" off. She's got enough Faendryl stuff on her that if someone were to look closely, they know what her heritage is. She doesn't wear a badge saying, "HI, MY NAME IS _______ AND I AM FAENDRYL"

Excellent, logical change.

The best way to do this is to have you or Xandalf use every word of Dhe'nar'si in the book plus a nice public pop quiz on history to have them do just that and never be Dhe'nar again.
This reset was really badly needed. Plus the ability to hide culture can make this so much more exciting.

I like it! But it really doesn't matter to Rada. A gnome is a gnome is a gnome is a demon snack.

I really need to start another character and see another side of this game.

As far as seeing a culture and knowing ICly that someone is that culture... I view it as being able to recognize subtle physical characteristics or mannerisms from the culture. Like in England people can tell what neighborhood you are from from your accent alone.

I can see a lot of Feyandrel getting mistaken for Dhe'Nar and vise versa, which may or may not be good for either.

Bah, Rada slept for 24 hours straight on the TH floor, what does he know about culture.

Yeah that's true.
Vics can easily tell I'm from the posh side of town. :)

Heh, and she can tell I'm an American cowboy/NYer. How you doin?

Back on track. Would it be IC for Dhe'Nar to hide the fact that they are Dhe'Nar?

Not unless they were on a secret infiltration mission or something. If they're Dhe'nar they're usually proud to be so and wear everything they can to look the part.
Now those who fail or become useless, weak or a threat to the general Dhe'nar population might want to hide it.

Xandalf's Dhe'nar-si has always been stronger than mine, which isn't saying much as mine is horrible. What I want out of a Dhe'nar? Do not tell me you were raised by halflings in Icemule Trace. Do not tell me you are a devout follower of Oleani.

Yes, I know, I am a damned RP nazi.

Like in England people can tell what neighborhood you are from from your accent alone. Some guy called me "distinctly foreign" when I was over there, so I kicked his teeth in. USA! USA! USA!

Unless and until GMs force people to read the history before selecting a culture, having culture flags is going to be dumb.

When I was a kid traveling in Germany, the English teacher in my aunt's school (she's a year older, so I went with her) made me read out loud so they could hear how differently I spoke English.

Wish I could've toggled off my damn culture flag when I was 10.

Not when you talk to them. The Dhe'nar are going to be the pricks with the braided hair that threaten you with bodily harm. ;)

It's about time they made this change. How long have we been asking for this? Hurray! :cheer:

I personally am not for the cultural reset aspect of the change, as now I know of a few characters that WILL actively switch.

The question is, if my character KNEW they were a Faendryl, do I have to KNOW now that they are what they change themself into?

Sygel is the main character in question. His cultural flag was Faendryl, though he decided to RP a Dhe'nar. He was of course laughed at, as he at one point was roleplaying a Faendryl and has acknowledged that aspect of his past. Now, he has the right to switch to Dhe'nar....so, does that make him one?

What do you guys think? I am seriously at a loss as to how to handle this.

You see Jack.
He appears to be a Faendryl Dark Elf.

That "appears to be" (IMO) gives you all the wiggle room you want to say that your character can't tell Jack's a Faendryl (or Dhe'nar) just by looking at him.
