Smite \ Bane

I was wondering what the pro and cons of each smite and bane are. I would like to be able to hunt undead and living creatures with my cleric. I am looking for a well rounded hunter. I am a pure magic runestaff using cleric. Any advice to which one would be better for me what be great.

Does it still determine if I can hit undead or living? I am not sure how this system works.. Anyone care to explain it in more deatail please?

You mean Tijay's explanation wasn't enough?

Basically Smite does more damage & takes less mana to use against undead. Bane is for living. As far as which deities do which.. when you type Convert List.. the top half are smite, the bottom half are bane. Hope that helps.
