Hi,

Are there any GS players checking out DDO?

The head start event is currently happening, looks interesting.

I've been involved with the European beta. It isn't very good. The graphics are already inferior, its HIGHLY group based, and every room is instanced (so loads of loading screens). It hasn't really expanded on NWN, in fact it feels like it's taken a step backwards actually.

Yeah my other forums talked about it

ZERO PvP

I heard it's not to great either

want an online game, WoW, or wait till nwn2 comes out.

Sounds like what's going to happen w/ Gemstone's MMORPG..... just a forethought.

Really depends on what you expect from an online game. I don't enjoy GS for PVP, but rather roleplay and character customization. In those regards, DDO looks promising.

WOW is for noobs who don't mind looking like any other old troll IMO.

While the graphics remind me of Guild Wars, I think DDO if run on a powerful graphics card looks very good.

But also looking forward to NWN2 and HJ.

WOW for noobs. Looks like someone got pwned often.

DDO isn't anything special. It's for people who like DnD and little else. From what I've played it provides little to no roleplaying beyond that of any other MMORPG and I doubt they can do anything or will do anything to change it. The naming conventions are even freer than GS, the quests aren't exactly groundbreaking and the entire game feels like it's been done before, and done better.

And the graphics stink.

Lol, I have never played WOW, only thought it but then read about the limitations of the character generator in gaming reviews.

Also talked to quite a few people who got bored with it fast.

That is why I can see its appeal to online gaming newbies who just don' know what actually IS possible these days in terms of customization, look at CoH.

DDO of course appeals to DnD fans, many GS oldtimers come from pen & paper campaigning.

They have not even turned on the high end graphics, will happen once it goes live. So far it seems a bit too linear though but this is just the starting areas.

On the US servers, there are RP guilds forming, bot sure if that's different from the European Head Start, can see beta attracting a more game mechanics-focused crowd.

WoW was fun for a while. Pretty easy.

FFXI is the other MMORPG I play regularly. It lacks in several areas but is a very deep game and the graphics are very solid. Roleplaying... well, there really isn't any and it is group based unless you're a rich ninja or a pimp redmage or a high level blackmage with access to Sea or a beastmaster. The only PvP is in Ballista or the new Brenner matches witch are both fun and challenging... but again... not roleplay based. A nice thing is... you pay for one account, 12.95 a month, and can change to any job(profession) you have unlocked by going into your house and changing. Crafting is also very solid with smithing, goldsmithing, alchemy, leathercraft, bonecraft, clothcraft and cooking. You can also fish, harvest, log and mine.

But no roleplaying. And the japanese population for the most part doesn't like north americans. And you can't customize your wardrobe.

Unlikely you've done many of the high end instances then.

I played this at E3 and beta'd it. Not a very good game imho.

Actually, I'll rephrase that -
DDO is NOT the type of a game a 'today's gaming generation' would want to play. We're so used to the way things are (WOW, EQ, etc) that anything different can come as a godsend, really. But, as far as DDO goes, it's not a godsend. Lets put it this way, if you enjoyed NeverWinter Nights, chances are you might enjoy DDO. It's NWN put in a stronger image of today's MMORPG. Their goal with it was to literally take D&D and put it on the computer, with graphical detail of your adventures.

DDO is nothing like NWN, with the exception of the basic mechanics.

WOW was a horrible game, in my opinion. I played for about three months before losing interest. You do nothing in that game but search for more L00T and try not to get PKd by a character 30 levels over your own (then, when you're capped, you try not to get involved in the constant PKing of characters 30 levels below your own). No substantial interactions to speak of, and most of the people are 12. Plus it looks like a cartoon.

HJ, if it gets off the damn ground, is going to be incredible. Very much looking forward to it. Though the graphics don't strike me as that remarkable, the game design is brilliant.

I tried DDO out when it was in open beta, and was thoroughly unimpressed.

Thing is, the company that makes the game is right near me, and I was thinking of applying for a job there. They're also currently making Middle Earth online.

I just don't know if I want to work for a company that produces such slag as DDO.

As for Hero's Journey, I think it's too early to tell whether it has good game design or not. They've only shown ideas and proof-of-concepts so far. And the game did just lose one of its biggest proponents with the departure of Melissa.

As for WoW, it gets really old if you have no interest in the endgame 40-person instances.

Well then, by that definition, it's not "nothing like NWN" ;-) They're are a lot alike, in the fact that they share the D&D game rules -- which you said -- and which I agree to.

StrayRogue

They share similar rules, but it works differently in the game.
