Am I missing it, but why do people even HIRE other folks to do their taxes? I've never had someone else do my taxes.

The only reason I've come up with is laziness. "Hey i'm getting 600 bucks back, why not give 50 of it to this guy so I don't have to work?"

Welcome to America.

Glad I did my own and took all 2500 of mine home.

It doesn't make sense for the average citizen but for business owners it helps to have someone on their side who knows the ins and outs of tax breaks and exemptions. Technically I should be able to write off the money I spend on gas to go to and from work in the military, but I would have to keep documentation and mileage records.

How much is it for Turbo Tax? The only reason why I consider having someone else do mine is because...well...I had like 6 different jobs last year so I have 6 different tax things to sort out.

With 6 different incomes you'll probably want to get Turbotax Deluxe, in which case 49.99 unless you're gonna get it in some sort of wacky rebated package deal.

They run all sorts of things like "buy turbotax deluxe, photoshop elements, two packs of gum, and a set of radial tires, and get mail in rebates to make everything FREE!!!!111"

Shop at Office Depot!

I love having an aunt thats a CPA. I got 6400 back last year, and I never even claimed child care. That costs me 10 grand a year, sooooo...I'm not really sure how much I'll end up getting back this year.

Oh, a tip for those college students out there. I know there are a bunch of you on these forums.

School expenses don't only include tuition. Include your gas to get back and forth if you commute, your books, your food, and anything even remotely school related.

It's legal, and it'll get you a LOT more back.

I found that one out a few years back.

I really don't see what's wrong with that line of thinking I'd however not call it laziness, but rather...tactful.

Some people might qualify to not pay the $19.99 - $39.99 fee when filing themselves.

Free File is a free service offered by companies for taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of $50,000 or less.

http://www.irs.gov/efile/article/0,,id=118986,00.html

It lists several sites, find the one that meets your criteria, and then go out to lunch on the $20 you saved. :)

My guess is you've never made enough money.. juggled enough investments/properties/payments and accounts or tracked enough deductions (among many other things) to make it worth your while.

1040ez is great.. but when things get deep it is always worth to pay a professional.. and I don't mean H&R Block.

Why would I file taxes? if I do I have to put down all my tax free income on my FAFSA which ups my EFC to about 3x what it was last year, whereas if I don't do it until later my EFC will be 0 which means free school for me.

Because you're suppose to and you can go to jail if you don't.

I know there's a max, but if you're a full-time student under the age of 25, you should be able to file as "exempt" on your work form as long as you don't hit that max. If you're exempt, it means you don't have to pay taxes and don't have to fill out the 1040. You should check for the latest rules about that, back in the stone-age there was no cap on it and the chick at work (who's a full time student, under 25, and working part time) says there is now.

Good one Genius.

If you had READ what I posted you would have noticed that the bulk of my income is non taxable. Aside from the fact that I obviously know a little bit about the tax code, that I'd at least know that it's mandatory...UNLESS you make under 8k in TAXABLE income.

Me ftw.

I'm pissed... I have to file a full 1040 this year. New York State decided not to give me a W-2, but a 1099-Misc. I don't even think I can get around it by being a student, and couldn't file exempt status, either, since I didn't fill out a W-4 or whatever.

meh.

The only reason I've come up with is laziness.

So, you're offering a "tip" based on specialized knowledge that someone unfamiliar with the tax code might be unaware of...

But, the only reason for not doing your own taxes is laziness?

That's sound reasoning there...

We need better icons so I can express myself in a more colorful way... I miss the old boards.

FYI, child care payments are not a taxable incoming reducing event.

Alimony is though!
