View Full Version : The joys of unemployment.

Ok, this may apply to students as well, as I have quit my job to go back to school full time. But, my work is easily handled and I find myself with much free time.

I've done the unemployment thing before (much to my regret) and I have had friends in the same situation at the time. We used to joke about the habits we fell into during this time.

Some of those habits... not showering everyday. Not leaving the house in a 24 hour time span. Eating or drinking the most ridiculous things no matter what time of day it is. Forgetting what day and date it is.

Anything else?

Forgetting what day and date it is.

This happens to me even when I'm working 60+ hours a week. I just...don't care what day/date it is, unless it's pay day.

Get married you won't care what day payday is. All I know is I keep working and she keeps feeding me. Works for me.

Now THAT'S ingenious!

Having just returned to work after a 6 week medical leave, I already miss:
Sleeping till 10am minimum.
Fresh banana bread every day.
Having my car's gas tank very close to full.
Shopping while everyone else is at work.
Being able to attend every single event posted on the Gemstone calendar.
Wearing PJs all day long.

Going out any night of the week. Its bizarre to stay out late drinking on a Sunday night. You meet the real alcoholics, tourists, and other unemployed jokers.

And a little note here about unemployment. I've collected twice in my life, at the advisement of others, and I regret doing it both times. I will never do it again. For some people with real financial problems it is a good thing. But for others, like myself, it is too tempting to just coast on for a while. One thing I can say about my two times doing it... I coasted a couple of months, but not the whole time I was allowed. And here I consider myself a Socialist.

I couldn't do it. I go stircrazy on vacation or long weekends. I wake up at 6am on Saturday and Sunday, and then once I've worked out and showered, I'm thinking about what I need to do.

My sickness is I don't know how to relax and I'm sure to have a heartattack by 40.

Drains on society, all of you.

If I am ever unemployed you can bet your ass I will drain like a mofo. However, my experience with extended time off from work involved:

1. Staying home for two months after our child was born. Not a bad gig considering the baby seemed to sleep for 18 hours a day. Maternal/Paternal leave FTW.

2. Gaining leave under the FMLA in order to care for an ailing parent two years ago. Not a gig I'd recommend for a good time.

Throwaway comments like yours just demonstrates a total lack of thought.

That said, I still laughed.

Ah, I miss my days on unemployment. Three fresh home made meals a day, no waits at the gym, no long lines anywhere.. the tv shows...

I always did lose track of the day of the week and the date though. It didn't seem to matter. The hour of the day was kept track of by the various TV shows and activities I did. I slept when I was tired, and woke when I was done. I got out of bed when it pleased me to do so.

HAHA yeah if working is in your blood you'll go stir crazy so fast. I currently work 60-70hrs a week because I need to be working. I could easily afford to not have the second job but the wife would kill me because last time I had that much time at home I just couldn't sit still.

No shit. I set myself up financially so I didn't have to work in school @ all. The first week I got cabin fever so bad it was ridiculous. I'd go to the Gym for like 5 hours a day and sleep for 12 and surprisingly enough didn't do ANYTHING productive.

If I don't have a million things to structure my life around I lose it. It was funny because they kept asking me @ the job interviews what I ws expecting to be paid and my response was always.. uh.. I don't care. At one of the jobs I was there two weeks before I even knew my hourly rate.

At least you knew it was hourly and not salary. :)

Never work salary unless its your negotiated amount. And never, ever, collect unemployment.

But I will say that it is not uncommon for people in this day and age to take some time off to further their interests and careers.

I took a month off of work between quitting the Palms and starting at the Wynn. I thought I'd love it. I left myself logged into GS all the time and managed to breeze through four levels (which is a lot for someone who took two years to reach 20). Other than that, I was totally bored. I actually found myself reading the "feedback forums" on ebay one day and almost barfed.

Backlash, if you're back in school and not working... how do you like, pay for stuff? I mean, if you've got financial aid, how does that even stretch to cover the stuff you need?

-K, needs sushi at least weekly to survive.

My expenses have been covered in various ways from freelance work to a nice tax return. I may be short two months max but I can cover it with part of an equity loan I took out to have my bathroom redone. My mortgage isn't much more than Dan's rent.

And sushi isn't TOO expensive. Damn, reminds me I haven't had any in ages. Now I want some!

We found a new favorite sushi place... the first time we tried it, it was just OK, then they got a new chef so we went again. He's the awesome. Last time we went he had live scallops that he sliced up for us and YUM. We can plan to spend at least $75 before tip between the two of us every time we go.

I turn into mush if I don't have something to do.

I'm very, very unproductive without the pressure of deadlines, and I have a real hard time getting things done unless I'm busy.

When it took me two months to find a job, I struggled to get up to make it look like I was going to be productive before sneaking back into bed.

A total waste of space...

People say the hours in i-banking are rediculous, but I think I need that kind of pressure to feel that I've accomplished something in a day.

Having said that, I still like my videogames...

I went through bouts of stir craze and complete laziness.

I would screw around with the car projects until it started to feel like work or go through a few days where I was a lump in front of the TV or computer.

Like longshot, I need pressure to function. Without pressure I procrastinate.

The wife and real estate appraisers did an ok job of putting pressure on me, but not enough for me to slip into a vegetative state every once in a while. With the pressure they did apply, I was able to remodel most of my home and surrounding property.

My hygiene and grooming never changed though.
