Face to face with recipient of world's first facial transplant (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20060207.wface0207/BNStory/specialScienceandHealth/home)
Three months after surgery, a 39-year-old French woman smiled hello with new lips

There are a few pics out there and I have to say, some look a little disturbing because of the scar, but other look good. The face she got is not bad. It blows me away that this is possible but I am happy it can be. I mean, forget about whatever circumstance lead to her losing her original face. Anyone, now, who loses their face can get a new one under the right circumstances. To me, this is a major development in medicine.
Check out the various reports. They say her face is not responding just yet, but she can smile with her eyes.

I definitely think it's a major medical breakthrough. Now comes the debate over how ethical would it be to donate your face? The woman says that her new face looks nothing like her old face.
I am an organ donor, but I don't know if I could donate my face. I mean, it's a bit different knowing your organ is working but for so much of our lives, we are recognized by our face and put so much pressure on beauty and what not.
It's different if your family can meet someone who you've donated an organ to and know that it works through them. Imagine them looking at part of you in the face (ha pun intended) while doing it?
I think it's one of those good and bad type things.

I can't think of anything bad about wanting to donate your face. It gives another person a second chance due to unfortunate circumstances.

Well, the woman's own bone structure would alter the 'look' of the donated face. So I doubt it would look like a twin of the donar. But still... I hope this is something saved for those who truly need it. Best wishes to her in her recovery though.
Wonders what this will do for witness relocation :O

Yeah I'm mostly in favor of this for burned victims. I keep thinking of that poor Venezuelan young woman who lost her face, hands and hair to a car accident fire. It would be great to be able to have a whole face restored to look somewhat normal, as they wouldn't look recognizable anyway.
I think this is truly inspiring that it can be done and I hope they keep it for good than harm, but we know criminals will be all over that soon enough.

I don't see that becoming a huge issue. As shown in the picture above, the transplant leaves one without much muscle/tissue control for at least several months. Second, as with any transplant, there is the danger of rejection. Third, it is major major surgery.
For a criminal hoping to change faces, I think it would be much easier to get an eye job, brow lift, chin and cheek implants, fat injections in the lips, etc.
The world's most notorious criminal....

That's still got to freak her out every time she looks in a mirror...

It's a shame they sewed it onto the side of her head...it's going to make her neck ache walking around like that all the time.

This is a very old story. Months old.
She was attacked by a dog or something and had most of her face eaten off. Hence, the transplant.
Obviously 3 months old, per the quote in the first post.
I wish Backlash wasn't so dumb.

I think the point was that she made her first public appearance after the surgery & that it was seemingly successful.

As compared to massive burns or dog-bite scars? Doubt it.
