Last night I was putting one of my mares out in the pasture and noticed that my bred mare was laying down, something she never does so I get excited as she is due to foal this week.
I get her up bring her in the barn and ready the stall with straw and prepare to stand watch for the foal I have been waiting 11 months for to be born. Well 5am rolls around and I am bleary eyed and tired and really starting to worry as my mare has not had her baby yet.
I wait until 8am and call the vet and ask him to please come over as I think we might have to induce my mare. He comes over checks her out and I am excitedly talking to him about this baby that is going to be born. The mare is a halter horse, the father a World Champion and for 11 months I have been looking forward to this baby I am certain it is my next World Champion.
The vet does his examination internally and looks at me and says I am sorry Tara the foal is dead in her.
Right now I am beside myself and am hating life and dreading having to be there when he takes this poor baby out of its mother tonight or tomorrow. :(

You should just, not be there. I mean is it really necessary for you to be there if its going to be so painful for you?

:frown: I'm sorry to hear about your horse. Hopefully she will be okay and will be able to have a healthy baby down the road.
I definitely agree that if this is so painful to be there when they take the baby from her, you should save yourself the heartache and not be there.

The mare was down again in the pasture I called the vet he came right away. We got her into the barn and she went down so he proceeded to break her water and began the chore of getting the foal in the correct position.
When a foal is born it turns in the womb and has its feet come out first but when he checked her this morning he found that her head and feet were turned down making it impossible for the mare to deliver. He checked the foal for a pulse but couldnt get one so gave me the news the foal was dead.
Fast forward he labors to get the foal in the right way and tells me ok get her up so I did. He then puts a strap on the foals leg to help the mare as she is weary and begins pulling. I am facing the wall away from him crying and not wanting to see this happening. I hear alot of noise and am getting faint all of a sudden I hear a gasp....
His assistant goes Oh my god the vet says oh my god I am like what what he says its alive!!!!!!!!!
He called it a miracle, we were all crying even the big tough vet.
Meet Miracle my new palomino filly

I have a feeling the baby horsie will be a champion as well. If not already a champion for surviving the ordeal. There is something about the white spot on it's forehead that it almost looks like it'll grow into a unicorn horn.
Congratulations and so happy for you Bratt!

What a fantastic story, and gorgeous pics. Good luck with the rights to the movie after the little one wins its first championship.

Haven't teh horror movies taught you anything? anytime an animal dies and comes back to life it's clearly EVIL
I suggest you name the horse Churchill, since you had a pet cemetary moment.
Uhhh, is that the mark of the beast???

That would only be a miracle insofar as any dick making a wrong statement and then be shown to be completely and utterly wrong could also be considered a miracle.
Anyway, glad your vet has no clue and your horse puppy is alive and kicking.
Nien - finding it very difficult to refrain from making some comment about making money breeding animals, but trying hard just the same.

The foal was jammed in the womb and couldn't move hence his conclusion no movement at all the foal was dead. He is not stupid by any means his conclusion thankfully wrong was based on what he could feel.
As far as breeding for money? I bred this foal to be a show horse that i will indeed keep so go rain on someone else parade.

I'd say that if he cant tell whether a foal is alive or dead, then he needs to go read some more.
Seems lilke a pretty basic judgement call to be making...and yet he did so well.
You can defend your little money making schemes all you like, the fact that you want to keep this one because its pretty doesnt change a thing.

I may usually be mr. insensitive. In fact, I'm a downright bastard-asshole. At least so says my mom. However, this story actually made me smile. I'm not one to give random compassion, but really, i'm glad for ya
Shows that you were on the cusp of chaos and order there, and in maintaining balance, you were on the edge of things. Being on the edge of chaos and order seems to make for good stories- I look forward to hearing good things in the next couple of years from this one. Ya must have a capped guardian angel, or something.
On a more personal note, Thanks fer making me smile.

Do you think your horse feels somewhat indebted to you for saving her baby which otherwise would not have been born? Or are these sorts of connections obviously beyond a horse's mental capacity?
Brattt8525

I do not believe the horse understands what was done in that context. My being there was a comfort in the sense she trusts me whether an animal can "understand" that what you did is a bit much in this instance.
I sold my paint stallion when I left my husband and had the chance to buy him back 5 years later. I drove to Ontario to pick him up and was horrified that the show horse I once owned was now 500 pounds underweight along with bad feet an infected tooth etc.
I had owned him from the time he was 3 months old until I sold him as a soon to be 5 year old and he was very devoted to me. When he heard my voice as I walked up to the barn to take him back to Texas with me he was whinneying and pawing at his stall door. I was horrified when I saw him and put him in my horse trailer and drove back to my sisters where I promptly called the SPCA to report the obvious abuse.
He is now even more attached to me then when I owned him for the almost 5 years and I think he realizes that i "saved" him I might be wrong but I believe animals in this situation can connect and understand to some degree.

I don't think you are wrong. Animals are smart enough most of the time to know who is the person who cares about them or not.
I know from my experience in taking in an abused cat, once she realized I wasn't going to hit her for doing small cat like mischeivious things, she became my constant companion, following me around and being a very, very happy cat.
I'd like to think horses are similar, as are most animals.

Congrats Bratt, I am so happy for you and your new foal....you made my day........maybe even my week.

Animals are smart enough sometimes. I remember my friend's neighbour who had a husky and fell in a hole or something and broke it's leg and couldn't get out. It's been there for for a day or 2 and it's usually all feisty, barking and mean. But when my friend went and saved the dog, it's all nice to him now, jumping and licking his face.. even after it was feeling better.

I have heard of plenty of situations where animals were saved and became insanely devoted to the one(s) who saved them. Their memories are also much better than most give them credit for.
My own horse has been apart from me for three years. The first time I went to see him it had been almost two years since I last saw him and the people caring for him warned me that he was hard to catch and they often had to chase him for a bit. I walked in the gate and he ran straight to me and followed me around til the moment I had to leave.
Some awesome stories on the web and in books like chicken soup for the pet lover's soul and chicken soup for the horse lover's soul
Good books amazing accounts.

So Miracle is almost 2 weeks old and she has had a few speed bumps along the way. She had an entropion eyelid that had to be stitched so the eyelid would not roll into her eyeball causing irritation on saturday.
Next week she is scheduled for surgery on her left rear hock, she has a valgus deformity. The vet isn't promising that the surgery will be 100% effective but without it as she grows it will put more stress on the joint and most likely cause even more problems. I asked him so umm how much is this surgery and he said it is between 1000-1500.00 dollars. I looked at the filly and said I wonder if my insurance company will believe you are my third child.
Whether or not the surgery makes her able to be shown or not really does not matter to me I am still having it done anything less would be inhumane. I will be nervous until she recovers from having to be put to sleep for it as there is always risks associated with that and her age makes it even more nerve racking.
Keep your fingers crossed for her.

Well the filly will be 2 months old on sunday and her leg is almost 100% now and she is growing like a weed. She is scheduled for a hernia surgery on the 17th of this month and hopefully this will be the last major thing she needs done.
I just got her registration papers back and I was able to get the name I wanted which is Downtown Flirt <her sires name is Meet Me Downtown...hence the downtown in her name>
