View Full Version : Botched Smiles/Acts
Fallen

Nothing says I suck hairy balls quite like botching a smile/act. Misspellings and the like are easy enough to gloss over, though every now and then I tend to make some real bonehead mistakes.
Here is a perfect Example:
(Evarin inclines his head towards Aksanya before turn evarin to depart.)
Turn evarin is a verb I use too often. *mutters*
-----
Anyone else recall a rather painful blunder on their part, either through use of the Action/smile command, or just the wrong word/verb at the wrong time?
most of mine usually consist of stuff like this.
(Marluxian grabs his stffa and winsk in your diretcoin)
My mind goes faster than my fingers sometimes......

I once tried to read what options I had as far as smiles went. I thought there would be some built in, kind of like GRIN. Unfortunately, I subjected a room full of people to this:

I used to have a character named Saryis that was basically a locker char, but I also RP'd her as Naessi's "assistant" that she'd drag around. Sometimes, she'd bring her along (or she'd happen to be logged in) during something important or a big event.
Once, during such an event, I decided to leave Saryis logged in and play her as being terrified of the whole situation. I forgot to switch screens properly, and did an ACT with Saryis that I meant for Naessi to do.
It was mortifying.
I played it off as Naessi kicking her out of the way or something, but gawd. It was horrible.

Evil MAer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Edited to add: I do the smile help thing all the time too. Or, on my dwarves, looking for the grunt options, I try grunt help, which sends all the empaths my way. <mutter>
And I liked the addition of <smile ::PLAYER> to direct your smiles, cause I was always "smiles tij" right after Tijay leave the room, or something.

My worst and most often type is you spelled oyu. Irks me everytime, and I even try to slow down so I get it right, but sometimes I am wrapped up in the game and RP and still screw up.

or going to type KISS (person) and using the wrong ring finger to type, suddenly attacking instead.
My favorite screw up was when I was trying to help someone stand up on a Twlight Hall house trip... and typed 1106 instead of 1107. Whoops! He was cool about it though.. he now has a feature altered scar that he blames on my empath.

That's cool. I like when people do feature alters based on interactions within the game. Finiswolf has one from the Jant invasion, and then he added to that a verb to help recognize it.

It's not an act/smile botch, but sometimes I'm talking to someone about someone else and I'll whisper to the wrong damn person. I had Debia translating some Sylvan for Xandalf in whispers and botched the whisper.
I also went hunting once with Ranad, and did TARGET RAN (for target random) without thinking and disarmed him of his katana. At least I wasn't ambushing - he's a good 70 levels below my warrior.
Then there was the time Debia took Evarin hunting, and he died. Twice. :saint:

I'm sorry, this thread is about unintentional errors. Evarin's deaths do not count.

I've had too many bad smile/acts to count. Terribly embarassing..though pretty much I've been able to work through them..mostly because I normally only use the act/smile command with people my character knows well enough to feel comfortable with. One time I did however manage to blurt out.."Kill Cock"..intead of typing out the command to kill the damned cockatrice..that was ages ago however.

We discussed this. At length. Both deaths were completely your fault. I have the logs, and your character's filthy filthy blood to prove it.
Edited to add: That, and I was incredibly drunk.

Whispering to the wrong person, I've done that a few times, by accident too, this usually happens when I haven't had enough sleep.
Also botched a few acts/smiles as well.

It usually isn't that big of a deal. That one, however, followed a rather involved interaction, and was in front of at least 4 people.
Mutters.

I usually wind up botching smiles/ACTs when I'm trying to type as fast as I'm thinking. Then the words may come out a bit jumbled. I swear my fingers have dyslexia on their own
There's this one time I remember I was playing 2 characters at once, one a male and one a female. Well something happened and I wound up reacting with the male much like the female would. It was pretty embarrassing  But I played it off and at least no one really noticed.
I find that the best thing in some of those situations is just to move on and not bring attention to it or it makes it worse heh.

Better than having someone whisper how they enjoy your company much more than their spouse's .. to said spouse. Fortunately I was neither the whisperer, nor the spouse!

1. I think the worst smile/acts I have had have always been followed by some smart assed role playing expert who feels the need to point out my misusage of the smile/act/tone. I accidentally smiled what I meant to act and it came out really twisted so I spent the next 10 minutes getting berated via whisper by this guy and who then became the expert educator by smiling and acting with little winks to me along the way.
Damn the GS Verbage Police.

I used to play several MUD's that had a special emote activate if you mistyped GRIN (girn, grni etc):
Kriterian tries to grin but just can't seem to get it right.
I could have sworn I saw this in GS4 when I returned, but it only happened that one time. Is this in the game or am I seeing things?

Seeing things or possibly one of those drunk scripts.

Some strange connection is made in my brain that goes like this:
<player> acts puzzled. = act puzzled
I have no idea why I keep making this mistake but I want to crawl under a rock and die every time. That's after I recover from my moment of frozen horror as I see the bright highlight associated with my name scroll up:
(Adhara puzzled)
Gawd! I've made some other mistakes too, usually with acts. I do alright with the smiles, not counting the classic cases of mispelling the person's name or the person leaving the room a split second before you hit enter.

You were likely thinking of grin <self>
Not that this counts, but this cracks me up everytime I do it.

You see something similar with a lot of newbies on the sprite quest. The sprite tells them to "act innocent" and they do, LOL
