Hey, folks. I'm looking into buying a new PDA. My current Palm is about 4 years old, probably time to get a new one.
ANy suggestions on brand? I only know Palm, and I want something to use in Africa, so this whole wireless internet thing isn't important to me (IE, the Blackberry) but it'll be nice when I come back.
Furthermore, are these even useful any more? What're the advantages vs. a PDA vs. a Blackberry? If the latter is so much better, might as well wait til I come home and buy one of those.

I use the palm treo 650 pda/phone combo and I'm enjoying its capabilities. I have added a 1 gig expansion card to keep add on programs as well as the pictures that you can take with it.
I guess the thing I like the most is the fact that I can have both pda and phone in one unit rather than lugging around two. I also like the fact that I can sync with my MS Outlook to keep all my contacts current and backed up. And I have the versamail program for the treo set where it ques (IMAP) my work email every hour (can sync up to every 5 minutes if you want) and download email. You can set it up for multiple mail accounts too. I also use a motorola bluetooth wireless earpiece too. The body-glove bluetooth earpiece was too static-y so I'm going to save that for my wife's next phone which will be bluetooth enabled.
Its a good unit.
I had a Danger Sidekick for a good year and a half and loved it... when it got reception. Ultimately I went with a simple cell with the best signal coverage. If I were to go PDA the same would have to apply.
Heard Blackberry is in some legal battle over copyright infringement and there have been rumors of a shut down in service. Blackberry stock is up today.
Of any type of cell device, in this city, the one I see most is Blackberry.

Well, I'm hesitant to buy a combination phone/PDA because I'm going back to Africa, and won't be able to use the phone piece until late July, when I move back, at which point it might be outdated, and I might want the newest model. Who knows?

I used to use a Tungsten C and loved it as well. You'll want a memory expansion card though. The 50 meg memory that it comes with just runs out after a bit.
My wife has a Palm Zire, its a cheap model since she uses it alot for work (RN Drug references and such) but it works well enough to keep her work calendar on it. I dont like the screen resolution and graphics though, even though its in a limited version of color.
I am in the same boat and am needing a good one .........I have heard there is a PDA that converts stylus writing on the screen to text. THAT is what I want b/c I cant read my own writing.

Yeah, it's called every single PDA sold today.
shows what I know about pda's thanks for exploiting my stupidity! I will give you another chance before the weekend is out......pay attention
The only thing is that on most units, the writing style is vasty different from how you would normally write and can be a pain in the ass until you learn it, then dont change to an updated model because sometimes there's a change in the way writing is recognized and assimilated into text, as I learned from moving from an older M105 to a Tungsten C model.
Although I have heard of units that will learn your handwriting and through association will reprint it in text form. I dont know how many of those are on the market though.
http://palmone.com is a good place. You can always find review for it on http://www.cnet.com .

Some people that I know use Dell PDAs. They're quite nice.

I have a Blackberry, as does my husband. Reason? They were free.
Now I'm debating if I want to switch my cell service to that, and just put my phone away.
Recently Blackberry was involved in an intellectual property lawsuit. And there was a threat/risk of having it shut down in America because of a patent infringement charges of the action.
I dont know any updates, but I do know it had a lot of folks really nervous.

And alot of people nervous to purchase them, as well. I'm going to cry from laughter, because 95% of Office Depot's Corporate staff use Blackberry.
Anarchy rules.
I'm going to laugh harder since its the prevalent means of communication in DC by politicians.
Makes my palm treo phone that much more attractive.
Although, having such a strong lobbying base (DC Politics) might(could)[probably] will effect the outcome of the case.

This is the PDA I have been hunting.....a friend overseas has one and you go through a complicated setup so the PDA learns your style. And anything you write, even shorthand, it turns to text.
Well, after a little investigating I found an application that can be loaded onto any handheld PC version (not palm OS).

So you could feasably look at Dell or HP pocket PC's and use this kind of app.

That's all I can think about when I see the thread topic too.
