View Full Version : The Workplace is dangerous!
So I went to work yesterday like I do any other time. But yesterday i almost lost my life!. Sitting on my barge pumping cargo to a ship I heard a loud crash so I run outta the house on the deck of the barge to see 6 container cans falling from the ship towards me.
Lucky for me I run for the bow of the barge with enough time to get away because the containers got hooked on the ships railing for about 2 seconds. It missed me with about 8 foot to spare!.
Well I have been pumping cargo to ships for 10 years and this is the first time this has happened but I have always talked about it happening and it did.
Having a wife and Four young boys at home makes me wonder sometimes is the job worth it?.
I guess all workplaces are dangerous!?
Is yours?

That sucks man. I hope you get hazard pay or something.
Most dangerous thing in my work place is the possibility of getting shocked by spilling coffee on my computer or something. Heh.

Yet another scintilating, thought provoking and enlightening post by Red.
Rowi, have you ever looked up the statistics collected by I think its OSHA to see how your job stacks up against the norm? It sure doesn't sound like the safest job in the world, even if it's not up there with Alaskan crab fishing.

That is downright scary, Rowi! I am so glad you escaped injury!
The most dangerous thing about my job is that I might fall asleep and fall out of my chair. :)
HarmNone is glad you are ok

The things we put up with for family!
Those subtle and not so subtle reality checks do tend to make us more aware of our surroundings though. Glad you're all right.
My home base is a plastics plant 400 yards in length by 226 yards in width. The products I'm responsible for are produced by 12 lines (out of 47) that are scattered all over. I have to walk the length of the plant 7 times a night (when I am there). In the last month, two line techs have lost fingers, one line utility had three fingers and the attached tendons and muscles (into the forearm) ripped out of their arm, one line utility managed to circumvent the safeties and get himself wedged into a palletizing robot at his mid section. It took 5 hours to free him (internal bleeding, ruptured vertebrae), two visiting process engineers received massive 3rd degree burns when they ignored line techs and opened the bleed valve on an operational extruder. The valve released 200 lbs of 345-degree molten poly onto them. Three lab techs (my department, not my team) received large area chemical burns because they couldn't wait for one of my team members to set up a chemical test .... Don't play with chemicals unless you know what you are doing. Two forklift drivers drove 3-ton lift trucks (including 1.5 ton battery) off open bays. One lift truck driver, trying to take a nap, backed into his trailer with a load on his forks. Four days later he drove out of the trailer in Plant City Florida, very dehydrated and very fecal smelling.
We get some doozies.

I agree with that. Another dangerous thing is when the boss walks up and you have to ALT+TAB away from GS3 right after you picked a fight with someone.
Not that I play at work.
Nor would I write this message from work.

Good god, Tsa'ah. Why are you working there?!
I'm at a major oil refinery. We produce 100,000 gallons of gas a day, give or take. Four months ago, we had someone trip over a step and break his ankle - that's the first lost time accident we'd had in two years. By far, we have the best safety rate in our company, but corporately in total, we don't have anywhere near the accident rates you're describing in either refining or chemicals.
What kind of safety programs do you have there, anyway?
No safety, just plastic. - Tsa'ah's corporate slogan?

No doubt your job is dangerous, and the pay is probably commensurate. I'm glad you're ok, and I'm grateful my job is a little safer :)
