So are any of you out there putting serious planning into retirement?
This trend has been gaining momentum in years, but a word of advice to all you 20-somethings (and those younger), you might want to learn how to invest yourself, because at the rate things are going A> you won't have any benefits, B> you will not have social security, C> It's definitely a pro-corporate era vs. employee era.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
If you are an independant contractor, instead of operating on a 1099, look into setting up an LLC or something along those lines.

I plan on having a stroke by the age of 40.

You really need a proper shagging. I'm not volunteering, but I am sure someone out there is willing to take one for the team.

Not that I want to, you know, perpetuate the off-topic-ness-osity, but I bet Nien's shag-a-riffic IRL.
As for retirement, I've got strong holdings in the Under My Mattress Fund as well as a smattering of cash in the Trust Banks? I'd Sooner Put My Money in My Sock Drawer Co. (est. 1995).

pufflucene: what makes you think nien's shag-a-rific IRL?
pufflucene: just by her anger alone?
latrinsorm: she's got that vibe man
pufflucene: vibe?
latrinsorm: yeah dude
pufflucene: she strikes me as one of those incredibly uptight prudish types
latrinsorm: not me
pufflucene: thanks for taking one for the team
latrinsorm: well obviously I can't do her, as we're not married

You already know I have. I've also been showing my mother how to invest the capital in her retirement fund, which is growing at a rate of 2%. The only drawback to that type of account is that I can't play options in it :(
I may not get to retire myself, but I'm showing most people that I know how to exploit the market.

I've got a Roth IRA and a few other investments floating around already. I still have many years of work ahead of me, though. :(

I put money into my 401k at work, and I have a really decent chunk slowly growing in a dividend reinvestment program through Wrigley (which is currently paying off in free gum YAY).
Jake's retirement fucking r00ls. If he stays with CCSD for 30 years, he gets 80% of the average of the three highest years of his salary. If he is in admin for at least three years, that figure is bumped to 85% and he gets free benefits for LIFE.
I'll say it again, I shoulda been a teacher.

PS "I'm an only child" is my other retirement program.

On topic. I am so totally running away from real life in like 5 WHOLE YEARS after MEH HEE CO and retiring into perfect nothingness (mmm, second world country bliss). But its a secret so nobody tell. SHHHHH.

With all the problems that have been popping up with 401Ks lately I wouldn't trust one fully.
The best way to build residual income these days is through businesses (owning them), real estate (buying and selling/renting), and paper (mutual funds, stocks, etc).
I've been considering using a VA loan to purchase a six-plex or something like that and renting it out to pay off the mortgage and have something extra after that.
I don't know who Jake is but are these benefits he gets for life things like health insurance, life insurance, that kind of thing? Sounds like a pretty good deal.

Ebondale, if you expect any kind of "normal" response from me after you called me a cunt because you make sweeping assertions and cannot prove them, I'm sorry to say that you're wrong (again!) Telling you this is the only reason I'm not flat-out ignoring your post, other to say that Jake is my husband.

Hey, if you want to carry all that anger around with you then thats all you. I always put things past me.
I don't think it would hurt you to be civil toward me.

Much as I really enjoy mass chaos, I was hoping that people could have a quasi intelligent discussion about retirement before a number of people (who will not be named, but myself included) derailed it.
Ebondale, thumbs up for giving good advice, thumbs down for thinking it would be positively recieved after you flamed the poster in a previous thread.

To cuntinue (haha!) I have considered going back to school (I already have a BS in Sociology) to become a teacher JUST for the retirement (and the time off, of course). I work ALL THE FUCKING TIME and he has like every other day off.

Teachers work pretty long hours (those papers don't grade themselves) and don't get paid a whole lot. Its probably rewarding work, though.

I have one of those retirement plan insurance thingies, as does hubby. They have a cash value you can draw from as needed without any penalty, you can borrow against it with no interest, and if you leave it alone, the dividends pay the premiums and buy more insurance so it doesn't cost either of us a cent at the moment. If Joe dies I'll get around $250,000, if I die he'll get around half that, since I got it when we got married and he's had his a lot longer.
Plus he has a pension, and we both have social security (we're old enough that we'll actually see some of it before it goes kaput). I'm also the co-beneficiary of my parents' estate, and they were primary beneficiaries of my grandparents' estate. So I'm pretty much all set, as long as I outlive my mom. If I don't, then it won't really matter :)

I've actually been in serious consultation on how I can dosomething similar. However, I don't plan on limiting myself to just one house and would probably constantly work the equity to acquire more property.
Me and my best friend are trying to hammer together a business plan to do it systematicly and we'll probably end up incorporating by the end of the year.
I don't think I know how to relax.
