So I need to buy a small laser printer for a single machine and would like some input on the two machines I am looking at please.

Having learned that toner costs are just about everything I need to balance a relatively small and hopefully inexpensive b/w laser printer with the printing costs associated with it while not forgetting reliability.

We have had an HP 1200 that has worked very nicely for us, but need a second machine now and that model is no longer made.

The machines I am looking at are the HP 1320. Staples Link For The 1320<------------- (http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?ts=1134595000460&storeId=100 01&langId=-1&catalogId=10051&productId=120014)

And the Brother HL-5140. Staples Link For The Brother HL-5140<---------- (http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StaplesProductDisplay?ts=1134595000459&storeId=100 01&langId=-1&catalogId=10051&productId=102413)

We have had only good experiences with HP products so far so were initially inclined to the HP1320 but the Brother HL-5140 costs about one hundred dollars less and toner also costs less.

HP - 299.99 after 100.00 rebate.
Brother- 179.99 after 20.00 rebate

HP Toner = 6000 pages @ 130.99
Brother Toner = 6700 pages @ 79.99

Have any of you had experience with Brother products or have an idea why the cost for both the printer and the toner would be so much better for the Brother?

We would like to save money, but if it's going to be much more prone to breakage then obviously it's not a good deal and we would rather the HP that costs more but works.

Any constructive input would be gratefully accepted.

HP is good, but overpriced. You might want to consider Lexmark as well. They're usually a good combination of price and performance. Personally, I don't buy laser printers unless they're network capable because I hate sharing printers, but if it's just for one machine, that doesn't matter.

Next time, just say "I know shit about printers" and leave it at that.

I've heard good things about Brother laser printers, so I wouldn't feel bad if you bought that one.
