Merry $#*@$ Christmas

There was a thread in the GSS board a few months ago that asked something like, "What oath has your character taken," which shaded into a question of how your character would swear (in character). That question's been working on me for a few months now, and I finally finished up a new option in the SWEAR verb: SWEAR MINE.

SWEAR MINE will allow us to create unique SWEAR messaging for each character who gets a crack at the service. Mine looks like this: Ozias spits like a dwarf at a halfling pepper tasting. It also has a targetted version: Ozias swears at a lost penguin chick, spitting like a dwarf at a halfling pepper tasting.

The usual restrictions will apply (akin to SMILE, ACT, and SAY): PG imagery and language; no names of characters; nothing that forces actions or reactions on your audience.

I'm hoping to get it through QC in time to run some holiday merchants so y'all can enjoy this new feature. So, just to get the tastebuds working: What's your SWEAR MINE?

~Ozias

One of life's primal situations; the game of hide and seek. The delicious thrill of hiding...of being discovered, but what panic when...the others abandon you! You mustn't be too good at the game. The player must never be bigger than the game itself.

I wanted the first response to the topic, so I rushed my idea. I will have to come up with something better should I ever snag the service.

Evarin looses a truly vile series of descriptive nouns and adjectives.

Evarin swears at the lowly halfbreed, loosing a truly vile series of descriptive nouns and adjectives.

You may have trouble in the fact that you station a half-breed in the area each time that you swear. Think about hunting grounds and other game shifts.

I'm not sure what my characters' would be. My empath is not the swearing type; neither is the warrior.

Hahahahah

No no no. That was my targeted version of the verb. I simply used the lowly halfbreed as that is what Evarin would most likely be focusing his scorn upon.

Evarin swears at (Insert minority here)

ElanthianSiren

oh, I should have realized that, yeah.

What about something that more shows Evarin's heritage?

Evarin murmurs a low series of skin-prickling aspirations in Dhe'nari.

(or do you think you'd run into trouble with forcing actions on others with that?)

-M

edit: It's a cool idea; I'm just trying to see how far we're allowed to push it.

I do not think that would work, as it would imply that they would know that Evarin was speaking Dhe'nar-si. I think skin-prickling would likely bother people as well.

Finally, Evarin doesn't murmur.

Adhara does not swear (with the exception of that awful awful griffin keen that *forces* her to swear like a sailor when she slides down the mountain grrrrr!) so her SWEAR MINE would have to be something along the lines of...

Adhara looks about to let out a series of curses but masters herself at the last second and converts the energy into a tight-lipped smile.

There are about five races that are missing their race-specific swear scripts.

Hmmm...

An Erithian swears loudly in cacophonous pangs and possibly even twangs -- It vaguely reminds you of the delivery guy from the local Chinese restaurant that time you should have visited the ATM right before you opened the door to pay with invisible money for your moo shoo chicken.

I don't know if Ozias would be keen on implementing the above though, as Erithians are generally thought to be a humble race, above profanity.

I'll have to think about it!

OMG this rules! I'm a huge fan of Ozias, he always seems to come up with excellent ideas and he seems to have a really good team behind him too.

I need to think of something anti dark elf-ish for Chica when she swears at Rheisia or Evarin. ;) Something high pitched and with a squeak!

thought of one for the empath actually, though I'm not sure they'd do it, as it implies literal cursing.

(Empath) rigidly steeples her fingers and gazes at (so and so) unblinkingly, her tiny teeth gnashing over a low hissing curse.

Warrior spits a vulgar oath in your general direction.

Warrior spits a vulgar oath mostly concerning the mating habits of "nancy rogues" as he scowls ominously.

Empath turns entirely bright pink before shrieking out a list of fashion atrocities.

YAY Ozias! I love little things like this that help just make your character better.

I totally have to think up somethin funny for Augie that doesn't involve tarts. Halflings already have a tart swear.

I'll probably find something that's got a high pitched squeaky voice heh.

And my other rogue, he definitely needs something vile. Yay! Time to put on the thinking cap

So a merchant is going to come in and alter our swear verbs, or is it going to be basically an ACT/SIGH/SMILE command?

Fallen
12-14-2005, 02:25 PM
It is a service some merchants will offer, much like feature alterations. Think Sproink.

What I meant, Stray, was that merchants along the lines of Sproink in versitility would offer something like those. Those few merchants that can do nearly anything.

Basically, the custom verb option has been somewhat automated so it isn't a special super-duper raffle prize.

StrayRogue
12-14-2005, 04:56 PM
I bet it will be. Stuff like that has to go through QC. Just like the custom item/player scripts and the custom spell preps.

My hope is that he has somewhat automated that process as well. By stream lining the review of the suggested verb, perhaps it may very well be possible for 1-2 merchants to grant you on the spot custom verbs.

That question was not asked, though it damn well should be.

StrayRogue
12-14-2005, 05:42 PM
You can't stream line that sort of QC, as far as I'm aware. It's not like an alter: you need someone else to check/doublecheck things, and that, I would imagine, is just the tip of the Iceberg. It took me what, fou months to get my own spell prep done?

Jolena
12-14-2005, 05:49 PM
Ozias posted on the officials saying that it will not be as unique to get as a custom verb or spell phrase is, meaning that it won't be near as difficult. I'm hoping that this will mean we have a much better chance of getting these than we do the others by making them more readily available.

Well the only thing I've gotten so far on this WD is a custom swear.. not one alter as of yet.

Oh wait, a few crap things from the Pirate quest. But anyway..

The swearing mechanics are a BITCH. "Swear" comes first, so it can be directed. And you can't use pronouns. None. Anywhere. So, no "pulls his hair", "stomps her foot" or anything. Makes it a pain in the ass to work out without sounding horribly awkward.

So, this is what I got (syntax is SWEAR MINE or SWEAR (target) MINE) :

>swear khels mine
You swear at Khelsea, hissing a dark curse, clenching fists forcing the fingernails to dig sharply into the palms of each hand.

What kind of stupid rule is no pronouns?

I mean, besides a stupid rule like wings can only be 3 colors and can't have any designs on them AND YOU SHOULD LIKE IT BECAUSE YOU COULDN'T ALTER THEM BEFORE.

In a larger sense, why is Simu apparently obsessed with making things as crappy as possible when first released?

Obviously so that their customers don't expect much from them. This allows them to continue to charge large fees for a product that requires minimal effort on their part.

I have gotten no alterations this week, and only services that were held in the First Class. Everything else has been impossible to get below decks. Either the merchants work for two seconds, or its Sproink. I just dont have the patience for Sproink at times. I will admit he is original with his ideas, though.

I agree with you Fallen 100%. I'm sure there are about 12 people on these boards that would disagree as they count their 30 alters (kudos for them). My 1 to 2 hours of game time limit me to 1 attempt per day if that. I can see if I had more time that I could have gotten more. The merchants are pretty easy to find and I'm amazed at how certain people are always the first to find them on a consistant basis. It is a skill that I wish I knew.

This week I got 3 charms and a bracelet done because I walked in on the merchant with no one else there, and he was good enough to keep making me stuff til other people showed up.

I got one thing deepened, and some temp padding added. That's it.
