Okay so anywho, my grampa passed away yesterday, and I'm in desperate need to get back home to the funeral. I'd be leaving from PDX (Portland, Oregon) and arriving at MCI (Kansas City, Missouri), but I'm looking at leaving either this evening or tommorow, and then coming back sometime after Christmas because my family wants to see me and all not just at a funeral. Anywho, I'm really needing to know the absolute cheapest fares, and since I'm totally new to this flying thing (flew for the first time yesterday when my boss flew me back home from San Jose)...I'm kinda clueless. Any help is greatly appreciated guys!
Thanks
~Cel~

Awww sorry to hear about your grandpa. I usually use sites like travelocity.com or cheaptickets.com. You can also try to call the airlines direct and tell them you need a bereavement fare. They'll usually discount fares when it's for a death in the family.

Definitely ask for the bereavement fee; I got it same day before luckily. I can't remember exactly who I flied and got it, but it may have been Southwest Airlines.
Just gotta call each one and ask who has the fee and who doesn't (not all have it). The airline called the funeral home to verify what I told them.

Good luck, and sorry for your loss.

I don't think she wants to fly freight like you have to.

Anyways.. last time I tried for the death rate the online regular ticket price was cheaper so be wary of that.

Please try to stay on topic people??

That being said...

Celexei, my condolences and best wishes for a safe and hopefully not too expensive flight.

Also regarding the bereavement fare if you do end up using one, ask if they do the call to the funeral home thing or if they require a copy of the death certificate or some other document. If they do, then you can normally obtain a copy from the funeral home so check with them first as the family can be a bit overwhelmed at times.

Southwest AIR FTW. unless they don't fly there.

I am sorry for your loss. SouthWest is a cheap airline but I don't think buying a ticket equals getting a seat. I think they oversell flights and I imagine that making your Grandfather's funeral is more important than a cheap flight.

Most Major airlines offer bereavement fares for family members. Personally I would call a travel agent, explain the situation and get them to find the cheapest bereavement fare that suits your needs.

Here is an article that may help.

I usually have good luck with Orbitz. also check more than one airport. sometimes you can save $250 by driving an hour

Unfortunately you can't get a bereavement fare online.

I'd check everything. bereavement price isn't always the cheapest.

Travelocity and check nearby airports like someone mentioned before.

I"ve only been bumped once on SW, it was willing, and they put me on another flight in first class. It's not a bad option, if they fly where you need.

My condolences, too.
