Man gets 3 months for uploading movies (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,174829,00.html)

Woman to pay $22,500 judgment (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,178310,00.html)

Grandfather to pay $4000 judgment (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,174608,00.html)

How are these people getting caught sharing files?
I use LimeWire, so I guess I have that risk of getting caught and sued too?

I noticed that the first article is from using BitTorrent that some around the PC have mentioned, but I never have looked it up before.

I know someone who got busted by his internet provider. I think he was using BitTorrent as well. He just played dumb and they let him off with a warning.

Yes you are at risk since you are a criminal. Illegal downloads/theft of songs and movies are actually ILLEGAL unlike "illegal" screenshots.

Your criminal IP has been reported to the proper MPAA official.

I believe it has to do with monitoring bandwidth usage.

Xyelin, could you report me too?
I'm a little busy right now. Thanks man.

The BPI is the ruling investigative body in the UK. It recently found "the 23 largest downloaders" in the country a few months back and slapped them with large fines.

So... as long as you're a sporadic downloader that stays under the radar, you're fine.
Gotcha.
:)

No that's actually false. Bandwith is just one way of monitoring. Certain default ports being used is a red flag also.

There are many methods they use to track this shit. Did you even read the links you posted?

Yes, and it doesn't say much (if any) as to how they were caught.

No it would take common sense to deduct that the grandfather only had 4 movies on his family computer thus not a heavy user.

I use torrents every Tuesday night to download any game I might want that came out. I use it again on Thursday night to grab smallville in widescreen (though since Alias has moved to Wed, it's not an issue).

As soon as I'm done downloading, I remove the torrent/connection and close out of the program.

I also limit uploads to 50kb/s

Yea what Stray said... Anyone can get caught using anything. if yer ISP has a reason to wonder why the fuck you been going through bandwidth like large business organization, then well, yer screwed.

And what happened to the rule, if you OWNed the CD, you can't get in trouble!?

Sean of the Thread

Yes owning an original allows you technically one copy for backup.. even though they copy protect their media?!?

And like Wezer said.. limit your UP bandwith.

you can't get in trouble for having a backup copy of a cd/dvd you own. you can, however, get in trouble for downloading said cd/dvd, reguardless of whether you own it or not. downloading copyrighted materials without consent is still illegal.

Them government people keep all the illegal downloaders names in a hat and every now and then they reach in and draw names for their various numbered fines to say they are actually doing something. Just bet on the odds to not be part of that raffle.

I think TV shows shouldn't be illegal to download. Especially if I have cable and could watch the show normally if the TV wasn't already occupied watching a different show.

Also, the widescreen version of Harry Potter I downloaded a few weeks ago wasn't too shabby.

<<I also limit uploads to 50kb/s>>

Rofl my entire upload bandwidth it capped at 14.4 KB/s. I limit torrent uploads anywhere from 1 to 10.

I make back-up copies of all my CDs and distribute them to various friends for safe off-site storage.

My older brother's name is Geoff (of course pronounced like "Jeff). When I went to his sports competitions they occasionally called him "Gee-off" over the loudspeaker.

A few semi-famous Geoff's

Geoffrey Rush (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001691/)

Geoffrey Bodine (http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar/nextel/drivers/28)

And, of course the most famous Geoffrey (http://www.tvacres.com/giraffes.htm)

Id like to think Geoff (http://www.luminarium.org/medlit/chaucer.htm) would make the list of famous ones...

Well. I guess they're welcome to try to bust me for downloading mp3s of music from CDs that I already own all they want.

Other than that the only thing I download is episodes from season 2 of Lost as they are aired on TV. I have the first season's DVD boxed set and every intention of buying the second season as well. :bleh:

Limit your uploads/downloads to vaguely reasonable levels. Don't upload much unless you're doing it for quicker ratio torrents.

So, lets say I back up my files to a web server. I own a domain and have my site hosted. I have tons of space because of my deal so I want to use it as an off-site double-backup system. People know my web address and have access to my files. I don’t tell people to download them but they do anyway. Who is at fault?

<<I don’t tell people to download them but they do anyway. Who is at fault?>>

If people have access to your files, you're at fault for hosting them.

The downloader is at fault for downloading. You can both be arrested.

Oh noes teh RIAA is ganna gets meee!!1 :)

I'm not worried. Sadly my ISP has a bandwidth limit of 10GB per month and I don't come anywhere near that.

<<Sadly my ISP has a bandwidth limit of 10GB per month>>

That seems pretty absurd, if it's a limit on download. It's very easy to go through over 300MB a day.

You would be for making them accessible.

The BPI said its cases were more about "deterrence than compensation". The UK action follows thousands of lawsuits against "pirates" in the US.

ARRRGHHHH Does this mean I be a modern day pirate? I needa get some new boots definately now.
