View Full Version : Writer's block

I have writer's block.

This is very, very, very bad.

I need to write... I have a lot of shit to get done for my round 2 deadlines for B-school.

Yet, everything I write sounds like watered down bullshit.

Why do people care what my long term goal is? Nobody knows what the hell they want to do, and if they say they do, they are lying.

I'm a shitty liar, so it makes this very difficult for me.

Example-

Me: I really don't know what I want to do...

Shade Ball #1: I want to start a non-profit in India to feed and clothe hungry children...

Lying shitbag # 2: I want to start a NGO to help save the rainforest/horses/puppies/whatever.

This is killing me... I have to be up for work in three hours.

A friend of mine has a long term goal of investing in a diversified portfolio until he has a few hundred thousand. Upon completion of this he wants to move to Thailand and open up a whore house/bar on the beach.

Just an idea.

The only real longterm goal that I can think of for anyone would be to just not die.

Just say this, without the cursing and with an explanation of why this isn't a bad thing.

I would normally say that people are sympathetic to people who have no idea, but I realized you were applying to B-School. Empathy not high on their list there, I guess.

Why don't you write about your own honest goals?

Like how you would like to become successful... (own your own business, or work your way up in an established one, what industry)

... and then follow up with what you would use the money for, in regard to yourself (spend it on a house, friends/family), and for the business angle, write about how you would maintain your lifestyle with intelligent portfolio management.

I suppose you could also write about how you would apply principles learned in business goal towards your lifestyle (ie, keeping a budget, as opposed to becoming another indebted American).

Hah, how do you know that's what he wants for his life?

If my life was as boring as what you just described I'd have to off myself.

Why don't you just say that you want more than anything to figure out what you want to do, and that is why education is so important to you.

Insert career paths you've considered based on things you've learned.

Piers Anthony does this thing where, when he has a spare thought, he just writes it inside brackets and takes it out when he's editing his books. Apparently he doesn't get writer's block. You might want to try something like that.

Writing long term goals is important. Let's put it this way, are you going to take charge of life or let it take charge of you?

or put in business terms, are you going to be part of someone's endgame or be part of your own endgame.

Most people who don't plan long term tend to go with the flow. If you plan on working for an organization, you better be sure that you have plans that don't include them because in this economic climate, you cannot rely on them for security.

I understand the importance of long term goals. However, there is a real difference between someone's true and attainable goals, and the outlandish bullshit that people write to impress admissions committees.

And no, this is not the place to find myself.

I must prove three things...
Why an MBA?
Why now?
Why at (school name)?

This involves proving that my desires up until this now have pointed me in a specific direction, and that now is the time to spend 2 years and 100,000 dollars drinking beer and playing rugby in order to make my wildest dreams come true. Further, I have to really sell the school: if they offer me their precious seat, then I'm actually going to take it. Schools are extremely concious of their "yield", and if they offer seats to people that turn them down, it makes them look less prestigious.

In all honesty, it's a lot like dating a hot girl with extremely low self esteem. You yourself have to look good and be confident, yet you can never stop showering them with compliments because they will go somewhere else to get more attention if the other person happens to have looks as good as yours.

I want to be a rockstar.

Your problem, as ironic as it is, is that you are too honest.

Maybe play that angle and tell them how bullshit their system is.

Yup.

Honestly though... making fun of people here is helping me write. I will now continue to assult the hunting thread.

LS. What gets you off? What do you enjoy about business, what can you contribute to it that other people can't?

What are your wicked 1337 uber skillz that differentiates you from the rest?

People who go for MBA's usually are looking at upper-management/executive level work, or they're going to start their own business.

If the school's incredibly prestigious, then you will have to have something big to share. The idea that companies are getting started to help social causes is not a joke.

look at ashoka.org

Socially responsible business is a growing trend, believe it or not.

But not to completely go off base, figure out what inspires you the most, and go for it. You might not even want to continue with the MBA application process, and there ain't nothin' wrong wit' dat.

Would you rather be miserable, $100,000 in debt at a job/function that you don't necessarily enjoy, even if you're going to make bank?

No, really... this grad school admissions process is a blast.

I love it...

When else can I be stressed out at 4:23 AM on a Wednesday morning?

Good times, good times!

Tonights post is brought to you by the fine Frenchies that make Gray Goose. I happen to like Gray Goose, even after Seany Digital's excellent Tucker Max post. Ah, nostalgic moment.

Speaking of other things weird and french, what ever happened to our resident *bleep*?

Taking a contextual stab at this, Xcalibur was banned. I can't really think of any other French(ish) people that we ever had here.

If you're still hung up on the writer's block part, I'm with TheE on the "what you wrote minus profanity". I wouldn't consider it a great idea to imply that every other applicant is a liar, but if that's how you feel, write that. It would probably also help to get someone else to glance it over. You may feel you could do better, but you've also been up at 4 in the morning drinking a couple times.

As an aside, I was never impressed with Grey Goose. Generic brand is just as harsh, has practically the same alcohol %, and is about 1/4 the cost.

Good luck and best wishes. Hope you get the school you want. Let us know how the paper goes.

That's not an aside. Alchohol is very much on topic in this thread.

I like the taste of Grey Goose, and I think it has a very distinct taste. Other vodkas I need to mix with tonic. I can drink Grey Goose on the rocks.

It's 4:19. AM. Fun times.

Piers Anthony has had 2 or more decades of writers block ... he does nothing but regurgitate the same stories over and over. Need a name for a kid? Mush together the parent's names and there ya go.

His brackets are broken records .... but that's not really the point.

Why an MBA?

Because you are driven to achieve.

Why now?

At this stage in your life you feel it's critical to achieve that goal in order to more accurately determine the direction of your future.

Why at (school name)?

The desire to achieve requires the best possible setting. [school name] offers exactly that.

This involves proving that my desires up until this now have pointed me in a specific direction, and that now is the time to spend 2 years and 100,000 dollars drinking beer and playing rugby in order to make my wildest dreams come true.

You could probably leave the beer, cash, and play out of the statement, but really acknowledge the potential to build connections and earning the prestige of the institution.

Speaking of vodka, there was a keg and a few bottles of liquor and stuff to mix it with at a party the other day and I had been drinking beer for a while and wanted to get drunk fast, so I figured vodka and sprite.

The only vodka they had was Kettle One, so I mixed it up and tried it. I have to say Kettle One is terrible when mixed with sprite, and I'm guessing I'd hate it just as much by itself.

Anyone else ever have it and dislike it? It had a weird taste.
