Does anyone know of a good game/humor/entertainment site that does not get blocked by firewalls:?: At work, I can't read the regular boards or access the game because it's blocked as games.
Just trying to find something else to do while I'm bored at work.

Depends on what is being blocked...
Try Yahoo games and pogo...

Bring games to work that runs off a 3.5 inch floppy disk.
That way it doesn't go onto the computer either.

Damn the man for steppin in on your game time fun! Could always start by catching up on all the comics from VGCats and Penny-Arcade, might give you something to start with to occupy yourself.

LOL they don't even have 3.5" floppy's on these computers. They don't have CD drives either.

Hey that sounds cool - how do you go about doing that?

My problem with running GS is I can't access the Simu server, not with SGE or anything. I don't see how a USB drive would help that.

That's why I'm curious to see what he says. I can't access the boards or anything because it's all blocked as "Games" so that stinks :(
Hell I can't even access GS4.org because some of the tags in the code for it reads as games. I need to change that.

Lemme guess, Websense?
That seems to be the most common firewall that they have up. Parkbandit and myself have that problem. Depending on their settings, it can block any of the following categories: Games, Hacker, Job Search, Sexual.
Basically you're out of luck. Post and read here, and check out the AIM chat room. When people post a link in the chat room they'll specify if it's "SFW" (safe for work) or "NSFW" (not safe for work). A quick glance at the url will tell you if it's likely blocked too.
Like Czeska said, the server is blocked. Using SGE won't get around that. Best you could hope for is possibly using AIM (if it's not blocked) to play some of the games it offers against people.

Give http://www.miniclip.com a try. Good selection. No idea if it's blocked though.

Access to the URL:
http://www.miniclip.com/
Has been blocked under company policy governing appropriate use of the Internet. Internet sites are categorized and access to sites considered to be non-business related are blocked. This site falls into the
Games
Category.

Heh yep, websense. That's the culprit. Someone in the IRC chat (which I can access) was telling me about using gotomypc.com to be able to set up a proxy access to it. I don't now if I'd REALLY want to get into that.
That last link did work too though, yay! At least I can play something
I've had fun reading these boards though and also checking out some random news facts on obscure websites that it doesn't block.
And then there's always Fark.com for some of the above.

The people that run gotomypc.com are absolutely irritating because they wouldn't stop sending me fucking e-mails promoting it after I checked it out for like 3 minutes.
It would be about six million times more efficient to simply set it up yourself, and it wouldn't be very difficult.
Couldn't you, realistically, just use a public proxy?

I used a method that worked in the past at my last job (though my IT buddy there told me they were cracking down) of setting up my home PC to accept incoming connections. And then set up an outgoing VPN connection on your work PC to dial into your home PC's IP address.
You, of course, have to install any software/games you want to use on your work PC, but all the internet traffic will show up as a VPN connection to an IP address (instead of hits to gaming sites/servers).
I played WoW from work (VPN to my home) and it ran pretty smoothly.
One downside of course being that you likely won't be able to access your work's network drives or E-mail while connected.

I hate websense.
We have it AND we have locked PCs. Can't install jack shit.
USB drives with little games are my bestest friend. :) Got a great little version of sudoku.

On the USB thing I just copied my entire Simu folder to the Pen Drive and first time you launch application just redirect the shortcuts to account for the new drive location. Not sure if that’ll be enough to work around Websense but you asked so I figured Id explain.
Or on our computers up here we had remote manager already installed and I was able to just remote into the Home PC …
Or I hear of a program called PHProxy.
All the same how annoying of all these companies trying to prevent us from relaxing to a nice game at work.

I appreciate the explanation. I doubt it would get around Websense, but it's cool to know.
The main time I want to play games or read boards and stuff is during my lunch when I have an hour to kill doing nothing. And then sometimes you just need a break from stuff y'know?
Anyhoos - thanks for all the advice, some of those links do work and at least I can access these boards

www.ebaumsworld.com is worth a try.
We have Websense too and it's a pain in the arse.. But I've also noticed that sometimes you can get to the simu site from some links posted on these message boards, pages that are normally blocked by webnonsense, you can even get to log in. Now depending on what you can/can't install from the patches (storm front, wizard etc) you have three ways of trying to connect, good old java may work if not able via wizard or SF.... I have just been apprehensive about logging in at work with my account details.. I'll see if I can find one of the links that works, there was one a month or so back I used..
edited to add link that sneaks by wensense..

Ta da!! Thank Nilandia for the backdoor entry to Simu there!

Yeah I lock down the USB ports here too. You people would hate me. I take information security very seriously. Any media that can be used to transfer data is either restricted or monitored, corporate piracy is a big issue especially with the research data that goes on in the pharma field.

Pfft.. I bet Angelina Jolie on roller blades darting around Seattle could pwn your network.
On a side note her boobs can pwn me.
A few years ago, myself and a colleague had Visual C++ installed on one of our machines at work that we were trying to learn at the time. Although very crude, we managed to create a boxing simulation that will run in a Dos shell window - unfortunately we never got chance to polish it or create a windows version as the machine with the C++ on it became obselete and removed and our new systems are locked against installs (no c++ compiler and unable to email .exe. files to/from home/work).
However, what we did create is fully playable and quite tough to beat (try to become world rank 1 by beating Lennox Lewis, the champ at the time, before your career is over).I'm going to try posting the final version we created here (not sure if I can due to it's size), but be warned also though, due to my colleague's potty humour some aspects of it are not overly Politically correct! It's quite a sizeable file, contained over 60,000 line of code I think, remember we were noob coders so no taking the piss.
I'll try editing to add attachment after, if it works it may keep you occupied for awhile at work.
edited to add..
sorry, tells me attachment too big, I don't have winzip on these machines either...grr

As for putting gs4 folder on your thumbdrive, not a bad idea. Still wouldn't have worked at my job because they blocked basically every single port.
I could only play a few MUDs that used one of the few ports I knew were open (like 23).

Funny enough - I have a chibi with Augie holding a tart. I may change my icon to that, I just like this little one for now.
