Dined with my fellow team members of my region tonight. We ate at a popular sushi resturant and for my first time eating sushi, it was interesting.

I have to first admit, I'm not a huge fish fan. I like specific kinds of fish, and the last thing I would admit to would be that any of them would be considered 'raw'.

I'm not a crustacian eater, so shrimp and lobster can be served elsewhere. I'm not into roaches, be them on land or under water. :barf:

So I offer myself up to the mercy of my team mates who are notably more experienced in sushi consumption. But with one exception. I can order my drink of choice as the accompaniment to said dining adventure. That of course being... no not rum for those of you who know me. I called in heavier artillery - the long island iced tea.

So adequately armed with liquor in hand, we make our orders. I llimp in with a spicey sirloin dish because it sounded scrumptious. Then I surrendured to the call of the ocean and ordered a spicy garlic basted seared ahi tuna and yellow tail. My brothers in fins ordered a barrage of crab, shrimp, squid, and other urchin parts unknown to which, after my second TEA, I will admit to trying squid to some liking, octopus and shrimp to no liking, and some smoked salmon which was delictable.

All in all I give the outing an A+ for the company and atmosphere, an A for the fish, and a B- for the non-fish. Oh and an A+ for the booze which helped me push down the items that decided to stick to the back of my throat.

And I must give a disclaimer that my natural disdain for fish stem from the odor of said entree. For pleasurable dining must embody more than just taste, but also presentation, texture, and most importantly - smell. With that said, I did not douse anything in lemon juice tonight, as it was not available and I did refrain from soy for my initial outing, but will incorperate that spice into my future outings at sushi resturants.

Now to go take a few advil and a nexium, to prepare for the morning after. :(

Sake, like Bailey's and extra spicy + sour bloody mary's are probably one of the very, very few alcoholic beverages I can honestly say that I don't immediately get the distinct urge to regurgitate shortly after first sip.

On the topic of sushi, I think tobeko with a quail egg costs about two to three bucks per individual roll.

Starting with a nice wimpy California roll if you like crab, is a good way to enter the world of sushi.

I go for the rolls. Not into the sashimi myself. Spicy tuna, yellowtail and spider rolls (softshell crab) are the best. And the dipping soy must have a liberal amount of wasabi mixed in.

Fuck yea. Spicy tuna and avocado, SUPER CRUNCH rolls, spider rolls, it's all the shit (except urchin and eel).

A+ everytime.

Even though I absolutely hate anything from the sea, and just the thought of it makes me barf, I think I could handle some well made sushi.
I've no idea why it's acceptable to me compared to stuff you see on Floydd.
Someone take me out to try it?

If you've never been, I definately recommend you get an experienced sushi avant garde to take you. The experience will be much more enjoyable.

Unagi is eel.. it's cooked, and has a delicious barbecue-ish sauce on it. It isn't fishy at all.

I can't do salmon.. ahi tuna is good..

If fish smells bad.. it's bad. Fish shouldn't smell at all, especially uncooked fish.

And eel/unagi is awesome! Sometimes I'll just have Unagi Don, which is a slab of eel on a bed of rice. Yum!

So hungry now. :drool:

I think I had some Unagi (I know I had eel) the sauce was very sweet. I was told it could almost be considered a desert. It was very tasty, even for an eel.

Ask for blowfish. It's one of the milder safer sushis.

I can eat dragon rolls until my stomach is ready to burst.

And I'm also another person that hates sea food in general, but for some reason loves sushi.

I tried a California roll before, but no one warned me it had avocado in it, which makes me sick. I think that was probably one of the reasons I haven't tried sushi since.

I need to find someone who is experienced to take me out to try it. I know the hubby would never want to do that, I can't even get him to eat cooked fish let alone raw! :lol:

Anyone know of an online guide to find good sushi restaurants? I live in Jacksonville and would love to find one to give it a whirl.

I'll keep the suggestions in mind for when I visit London soon.
I've eaten raw salmon before, but that was packaged and smoked. Nice, but nothing like I want to try.

If/when you go, make sure you don't smother the sushi with soy sauce, as it's supposed to enhance the flavors of the fish, not totally mask it. And dip your sushi fish-side down into the little soy sauce bowl... it's meant to flavor the fish, not the rice.

As for the dipping of the sushi of fish into the soy, that's only if the sushi is fish and rice only. When it's a combination roll, very difficult to not dip the rice in too.

As far as the soy and wasabi is concerned, it's all about preference.Some put wasabi in the soy, others put the wasabi right on the roll and then dip in the soy. Others don't use soy at all.

Hmmm. Houston. Westheimer....Mo Mungs. GO! Its the place to be if you want good sushi. I'm an addict. Its become part of my Sunday ritual along with the Menil Collection and Byzantine Chapel.

Sushi is ok, shrimp is where the win is. Asian shrimp is consistently knock-my-socks off good.

HAHA! I got home tonight and had no craving for fish. I stopped off at Jalapenos and had my mexican fix when I met up with the family. They have the best margaritas, and well the food is top notch.

I'll venture into the world of sushi again on business I'm sure. For now I'll save the experience for that side of life.

After a week of eating out, what I really want is a nice homemade boars head honey maple turkey and cheese (swiss and velveta) on an onion roll with a side of funyuns. Thats for lunch tomorrow. :)

Pretty sure that sashimi (slab o raw sea creature on bed of rice) has a dab of wasabi between the fish and rice.

Its not that noticeable with a savory fish like tuna or eel, but try some prawn sashimi. Prawn is somewhat sweet but not overly flavorful so that wasabi will kick you right in the nose.

And a little trivia. Wasabi is a root and considered a mustard.

Thank god someone knows this.

I have a real difficult time eating sushi with my friends because they just destroy it. The use the rice to soak up the soy sauce like it's a fucking biscuit. They see the disdain in my face, and it makes them uneasy, so I don't eat sushi with them.

Spun, a dragon roll is something that some Korean made up to sell sushi because he has no culture of his own. So, he just makes up a bunch of shit and gives it a Buddhist sounding name.

Unfortunately, some finer sushi restaurants have begun serving this crap to sell to Americans because that's what they've become accustomed to.

"Can you make me this thing I had once? It had this stuff in it,... you know, the stuff? And around it had this other stuff on the outside. Can you make me that?"
