I'm curious about just how much ranks of lore, arcane symbols etc that I need to activate the following:
Scroll Infusion
Cloak of Shadows retribution effect
Minor Summoning
Animate Dead
Basically I'm thinking of going 25 ranks in each lore and AS. Will this make the above spells and effects useless to me?

Without atleast 1x training in Arc symbols, you are going to have a hell of a time infusing scrolls safely. That spell can kill you. I would say 50 ranks and the spell will start being somewhat reliable, IF you know what your doing.
What is the level of this character, Stray? I will try to get you some more definitive answers.

Erm, mid fourties. 45 I think.

Bump. I will sort this out tomorrow.

Your MAL will be -10+, meaning you wont be able to animate anything within ten levels of your character.
As for summoning, who can say? You likely could have little difficulty in getting a random demon in a summoning chamber within the sorcerer guild, though I wouldn't hold out hope for a specific type summoning.
At 25 ranks, you would be decently protected against the backlash for 712, as so long as you used low level spells as your retribution spell. Think 706 or lower.

At 25 necro ranks, your MAL will actually be -9 (big difference, I know). Every 5 ranks beyond that will increase it by one.
25 demonology ranks will allow you to summon a minor demon from a demon-specific runestone 100% of the time in a summoning chamber (and 75% of the time outside of one)
25 demonology ranks will allow your cloak to activate 70% of the time.
Personally, I'm a big fan of the 2x lore route. It pays off, especially at later levels.

MAL?
And I'd rather have skinning skills to be honest. The lore based spells are basically something to play around with, whereas I skin all the time.
I think it's sorcerer speak for Maximum Animate Level?

Correct. Aside from Phasing items to make them lighter, and the 712 Backlash protection, Demonology is useless. Minor Summoning isn't worth the bother.
The only solid reason to train in Necro lore is 711. Pain Infliction is a hell of a spell. Unless you are doing .5-1x, I wouldn't bother with either of them. The main spells just suck at the moment.
So if you don't care about 712/711/704, don't bother with lores.
50 demon lore is enough (highest chance of 712 backlash).
After that I train 10 times in Necro just for the stealing of critter blood when I need it out in the field, plus it's enough to animate something tough enough to murder an enemy I don't want to be charged for.

All you need is 1 rank of necro lore to gain the leech effect.

Many people firmly hold that lores are worthless; others firmly hold that they are a necessity and quite valuable. If you like having access to all of your sorcerer's full abilities, go lores. If you couldn't care less as long as your DC, FI, and MD are working properly (and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that); don't bother.

Saying sorcerer lores are a necessity is pushing it to the extreme. Perhaps for their runestaff DS role.

I can't imagine enjoying a sorcerer without lores. Therefore, I say necessary.

So..you didn't play one before 725 and 730 were out?

I stopped playing for quite a while actually due to boredom with the profession. Started back up again after the release of 725, stopped again out of boredom, started back up with the release of 730, etc.
So yeah, lores have played a huge role in my enjoyment of the profession. Not that I really needed to justify my personal opinion on my character, of course.

Well, since it was already stated I didn't think an explanation was too much to ask.
Fair enough
