First Ebon Gate was 10/31/1998, and the first pay merchant event that I can remember. There was also an Oleani Festival in May of 1999.

Mine's not that bad... But I had left the game for a few years and only returned before the Artisans Faire.

I actually had no interest in the Wavedancer. I still don't. Not sure why though.
