View Full Version : A sucky day (and it's only 9am)

So I'm on my way to work in the rain. In Houston.
(For you Houston people, I can stop there. You know where this story is going.)
Anyway, I'm in the exit lane about a car length or two behind an 18 wheeler. Safe distance, you say? You'd be right. If this wasn't Houston.
Mr. Green Honda decides "Lol I don't care it's raining!" and cuts me off between me and the 18 wheeler. I give him a quick horn blow to let him know he's an asshole and he needs to not do that, then I brake to put some distance. Well, Mr. Green Honda had other ideas. He decides to smash into the guard railing for no aparent reason, spin out, and cause me to hit the side of his car because there was no way I could avoid him.
Flash forward about 30 minutes to me standing in the rain in my Geek Squad outfit talking to the cops and the paramedics. The other guy is OK, his car is not. My (relatively new) car has the entire front passenger side caved in, yet is still drivable. I'm now about 45 minutes late for work. Or so I thought.
The punchline: I was scheduled for 7:15 PM. Not AM.

Heh, damn, you should have had Farmer Bob give you a lift in his hotrod, Drew.
That's terrible, though! I hope you have good insurance?!

I have great insurance, but that's not the point. He was at fault, his insurance will be paying.
Fuck him.

What did he say, curiously? What was his story? Did he try to blame it on you?

I would totally use the opportunity to say " See? SEE? You see what happens when you drive like a dick?!?"

And then use part of the cash to buy the TC Supercharger, FTW.

Dunno about other states but for the Connecticut written license test, all drivers have to know that the proper distance between two vehicles on the road is one car-length for every 10 miles per hour speed.
So if the truck was going 60, and you were going 60, the law is that you have to be at least 6 car-lengths distance from him. Not many people obey that law, but it makes a huge difference when there's an accident and the cop has to decide who's at fault.
Holy shit Drew!
You have just become another Houston statistic.
I bet you kept thinking all the way home, 7:15 PM!! Damnit! I could have still been in bed and this idiot would have had this wreck without me.
:banghead:
Sorry for the wreck, glad his insurance will be paying.

Technically, in some places in CT the test isn't even written anymore, it's computerized.
And as an aside, a vehicle going twice as fast requires four times the distance to skid to a stop, so I don't know as that benchmark was ever true.

In the metroplex the only thing that leaving a car space between you and the guy in front means is some other driver is going to pull right into your safe spot.

This whole part of your post actually made me laugh out loud.

Good story.

Hehe @ 7:15 PM not AM part.
That sucks... I'm sorry your car got le pwned, but I'm glad you're okay.
And as for the thing that's supposedly on the CT written part of the driver's test.... yeah, I got my license 3 years ago and it definitely wasn't on there.

That sucks Drew. :( Like HN said, at least he has insurance.
His insurance is gonna get pwned. Glad you're ok kid.
Houston is an accursed place. Something horrible always happens to me whenever I go there, even when I'm just changing planes. From brake failure on the plane to bats in the hotel room assigned to us by a felon. ACCURSED, I say!

Wow, I just tried looking for references about that rule, and found none in any of the DOT websites. Talk about outdated, heh. They should make people re-take the written/computerized/verbal test every dozen years just to make sure everyone is updated on the rules and regs. I got my license in 1977. The new "guidelines" refer to a 2-second rule: you spot the location of the car ahead of you, and if you arrive at that spot less than 2 seconds later, you're following too close.
Suffice it to say though - if you're on a highway, and assuming you're going -near- the speed limit (which is gonna be between 45 and 70 on any interestate in the USA), 1.5 car lengths isn't gonna be nearly enough if there's a truck ahead of you. For the exact reason Tayre gave: it's just about enough space for some moron dickhead to slide in, forcing you to slow down drastically yet not giving you enough time to get the fuck out of the other car's way when that guy does something even more stupid - like hitting a guardrail for no apparent reason :)
Glad you're okay though Tayre, and doubly glad that moron is being held responsible and that he's insured.

Drew it will work out for the good.
Someone went into the back of my car a few months ago. I got a broken bumper (from before that) fixed up, and am currently waiting on a cheque for £1800 ($3000) as compensation.
I have never been as interested in the post as I am now.
You will do just fine.
Learn to read the time though.

Perfect ending to the perfect day:
Best Buy asked for my resignation.
Not unexpected, but still a nice touch.

Glad you're okay, and that he had insurance. Accidents suck, regardless.
Just make sure his insurance pays for EVERYTHING. Insurance companies can be asses.

Because I chose to go to Time Warner on Black Friday rather than Best Buy afterall.
I did the math, I would have lost about $100 in pay going to BB rather than Time Warner. I don't know about you, but $100 is a lot to me right now.
