WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Federal Bureau of Investigation issued an alert Monday about a scam involving unsolicited e-mails, purportedly sent by the FBI, that tell computer users that their Internet surfing is being monitored by the agency.

The users are told they have visited illegal Web sites and are instructed to open an attachment to answer questions.

The FBI did not send these e-mails and does not send any other unsolicited e-mails to the public, an agency statement said.

Anyone with any knowledge of the Government would know that they would not be notified unsolicited by someone with a Public Affairs Office.

Another scam I heard that has hit 11 states so far (according to the news) is a lady/multiple people calling targetted people (mainly elderly) to let them know they must perform jury duty. And they confirm information over the phone.

Old people = teh lose.

... I better let granddad know about this. He still minimizes each window before he closes them.

The FBI does monitor internet activity using a program called Magic Lantern. Although they don't tell you they are monitoring you.

Most AV programs don't detect it but a British company Sophos makes an AV product that will detect it.

That's how you know that you're really in trouble.

For the low low price of $999.99 (plus shipping and handling) (please provide credit card information), I will help you hide from the Feds.

At the same time, I will transfer my entire bank balance of approximately $270 million from my account in the Caymans to your account (please provide routing and account number) to keep it out of the hands of the coup throwing guerrillas. You will be allowed to keep 20% for your trouble.

Please provide your SS# and date of birth so that I can issue your 1099.

Thank you very muchly.
