I would like everyone to share a round of WTF with me as we look at the topic that the AFSA scholarship is based upon..
The AFSA Scholarship Essay Contest is open to high school seniors who plan to further their education at a college, university or certified trade school. You must write a 700 to 1,000 word essay on the following topic: Describe the history of automatic fire sprinklers and how the recently proposed federal legislation HR (House Resolution) 1824 may affect fire sprinkler installation in your community.

It's more a fairness thing. I mean I doubt any student has any background with that subject, so right off the bat everyone who enters this contest does so on an equal footing.
But yeah, it's a pretty insignificant topic.

Let's see... They want you to write an essay on a subject that almost certainly is no one's favorite subject or even something anyone is likely to know about before hand. So they're not only testing your writing skills but your research ones as well. Plus they get to see if you can write a concise, informative and hopefully non-boring paper.
Sounds smart to me. Especially since it's their money you're asking for.

It is a retarded topic. They could've asked for an essay about the thermal activities at the bottom of the ocean and had it been more interesting. Not only is it ridiculous and stupid, who would want to read all those essays on such a boring topic?

What Ravenstorm just said.
It's not supposed to be interesting. Anyone can write about something interesting. It's the crap stuff that you have to drag yourself through in college.
Don't sweat it, Leloo. You have a natural writing ability anyway. Just work hard at the research, and you'll do fine.

I remember doing shit like that when i worked at Pinkerton Security. They want you to like, make love to the fire extinguishers. It's dumb.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the AFSA stand for American Fire Sprinkler Association?
If so, then it makes perfect sense for them to want students who expect scholarship money from them to write an essay about the purpose of their existence.

Ah thank you Bestatte. That little but critical piece of information suddenly explains everything.

I don't actually know if that's what it means. Once I feel like signing onto AOL, I'll check.
