I really shouldn't read online news.

Personally I think the US needs a similar law regarding people who disbelieve the moon landing...

He's one of the better known revisionists posing as historians.
Hope they toss away the key.

The fact that I need Google toolbar to block popups from CNN.com is disheartening.
Irving is, without a doubt, an idiot.

Jesus I am ignorant. Never even heard of the guy. Just strikes me odd that there would be a law like that in place at all.

Well it is Austria, they're probably sensitive about the whole thing.

Holocaust denial is currently a crime in Austria, France, Germany, Israel, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania and Switzerland.
How would you classify this I wonder. A thought crime?

Well if the US suffered casualties even close relatively speaking to those suffered by most of those countries during the war, you might well have such a law here.
Heck, we had a few planes hit a few buildings and arrested 83K people. What might we do if we suffered some 5+ million lost like Poland, or the 7+ million of Germany not to mention the near complete loss of infrastructure of much of these countries.

"Denying the holocaust is a crime in Austria which carries a sentence of 1-10 years."
Thats nuts. I mean, I may not agree with his beliefs but I don't think that conspiracy theory should be a crime, you know?

I can't believe there are people who think that way still. Do they think all the photos and videos were faked, too?
Jail time is a bit harsh imo, but I think people trying to convince others that it never happened is fucked up as well.

I mentioned this to a few friends tonight. Their response was surprising to me. They said some of the same things said in previous posts. They seemed to feel that because it was another country with separate rules of law and conduct that it was ok. I just find it odd that people who whole heartedly support freedom of speech do so only for their fellow citizens. And are disturbingly gleeful that someone in another part of the world is being arrested for expressing an opinion, ridiculous though that opinion may be.

Poignant how countries emulate us and pretend to be as free/good as the US, but still lack that edge. Glad to be here, you?
Voltaire: "I may not agree with what you have to say, but i'll defend to the death your right to say it." --Genius
Point? Austria is not the US. Be careful what you say when abroad, freedom of speech doesn't exist anywhere like it does here.

barely on topic.
I think it's possible the moon landing was faked.
Holocaust clearly not faked. but I will say the Nazi's had some of the sharpest uniforms in military history.

I don't know if it should be against the law, however, I would take a look at the sociopolitical structure of the countries. It appears that there seem to be nazi sympathizers (moreso than in the US) that might act a bit bolder if these laws weren't in place.
It's one thing to walk down the street, dressed in robes, holding up "KKK" signs.
It's an entirely different thing than throwing rocks at police/through windows/rioting as part of expressing sympathy towards aryan beliefs.
From what I gather, the "neo-nazi" crowd in Europe is much more violent than any of the white supremacist groups in the U.S.
As repugnant as his views are, he has the right to articulate them.
It is ridiculous that one could be jailed for denying the Holocaust, in a free society, freesdom of speech is essential. This law sounds Orwellian being jailed for a thought crime.
The CJC has been pressuring the Canadian Government to make Holocaust denial a crime in Canada luckily we haven't caved to the pressure.

Such things happen. I don't believe that the Holocaust was faked by any means but I have serious doubts about an "al Qaida attack" on September the 11th, 2001.
