Yes.
Eat a banana.
Potassium kills muscle cramps.

I used to get those during work out/ practice season. They suck, and hurt the worst at night.
Maimara is right, potassium kills them. Our trainer told me to eat 1 banana everyday. It works, I haven't had that problem since I started doing that.

Sounds like a charley horse. Try massaging that giant lump of muscle and relaxing your leg.

I do that *nods* I actually have my hunny do it for me, but even after its gone, I'm limping the rest of the day ... *sighs*
i remember halloween
10-09-2003, 09:25 PM
yea, that used to happen to me when i'd run without stretching a lot and it definitely can keep you limping around for a day or too. one thing that is pretty cool is right after your muscle relaxes that feelings of resting while being exhausted is really nice..

What I usually do is sit with my toes touching the floor and force my foot flat to the floor, it really hurts but usually stops the spasm.
The relief afterwards is a kind of nice feeling too.

Potassium does work. They used to give it to us before football games. Better yet, just find a good multivitamin.
You won't get the cramps, you'll get sick far less, and if the vitamin has a good amount of B12 (or B2, I can't remember.) it'll turn your pee a REALLY impressive shade of bright yellow.

I'm sure it would do just that ... but I wouldn't be very impressed

Go to McDonalds get the biggest straw you can find and suck it up.
That or put the potassium in your body. When I was big into distance cycling I used to put bananas away by the bunch. Your thigh is a huge muscle and if it starts getting lactic acid in it.... the pain train is coming.

Potassium is the answer as many have said. When I first experienced those middle of the night calf cramps my mom told me "eat a banana" which didn't make sense to me as a child but later she explained that it was the lack of potassium.

Umm, ok now that we all know what color Peams pee is......:?:
There are some pretty good over the counter potassium supplements too, if you don't like bananas or raisins. You can just take a pill everyday.

I just thought it was kind of interesting. The first time it happened, I was like OH MY GOD MY KIDNEYS ARE FAILING. And then I did some research and found out that it was the multivitamin. It's really impressive, once you relize you're not dying.

Those spasms do suck.
I used to get those more often when I was younger and still do several times a year or so.
As has been said potasium and keeping hydrated is the key to preventing them, but when they are in full effect and wake you from a sound sleep my experience has been to clamp down and tense up the whole leg and then after 30 seconds to a minute, veeeeeeeeeeery slowly release it. Most of the time this takes two or three tries as the muscle starts to spasm again but It has yet to fail me yet even if I have been forced to tears in frustration when it takes that horrible fourth or fifth try. This works if no one is around to help, or if you don't want to wake anyone.
What can I say, I'm stupid/proud and don't like to call for help unless I think I'm going to die or something.

My brother took a water pill once to cut weight for wrestling, and it turned his pee blue.
So you're not the only one with colorful pee.

Oooh maybe you should do that before you write your name in the snow!
On topic: I use to run 5-10 miles a day, played sports and such, muscle cramps in my legs were common, but banana's are the cure all and they taste great mixed into a shake. Good Luck with those!
I get weird muscle cramps like that. Got one in my back a couple of weeks ago, so bad that I couldn't take a deep breath and I couldn't move for like... half an hour. But that was the first one in a really long time, and possibly the strongest. Er... I don't know if it's from the same source as the leg cramps though, the lack of potassium. I do excersize regularly (jogging and capoeira) but it doesn't seem to have much to do with that.
Any other potassium sources besides bananas and raisins? I don't know how many raisins I can eat before I get sick fo them and I absolutely despise bananas... I mean, automatic gag reflex no matter what form they're in. Guess I might just have to turn to supplements.. hm.

Speaking of bananas, this guy at this party last weekend claimed he could put an entire banana down his throat and pull it back out.
Does that make you gay? (I'm asking the expert, Maimara)

I got those horrible things on a regular basis when I was pregnant, and that is even while taking a very good prenatal vitamin.
DCSL, can you do grapes? Any easier than raisins? Other good sources are cantaloupe, fresh orange juice, some types of fish (not sure which), and even whole milk is not bad.
Ah, I can do the grapes, cantaloupe and orange juice at least, thanks! Maybe I can get my boyfriend to feed me grapes in bed and fan me with a palm frond. <3.3 Ah, dreams.

I've gotten that cramp once...full effect. It hurts like HELL. But since that day, I dono what it is..but just before one of those hits, my body wakes me up..I can feel it comming, and I pull my toes twords me (point my toes strait up from the bed and pull that muscle taunt) and it stops it from happening..I gotta keep it taunt for maybe..45 secends, and I'm good to go.

Before a wiz quiz/piss test/urinalysis one of my friends drank two of those bottles of red food coloring. He brought his urine sample to the guy in charge and said the reaction was priceless.

Ya instead of eating a couple boxes of Hostess cupcakes before bed, have a few bananas. Your legs might be cramping at night due to the strain they endure while supporting your weight during the day.

Fuckstick? You get lactic acid through exercise. I doubt this girl is doing much exercise outside of her legs which are supporting her heavy frame. Losing weight will put less strain on her legs, and since she doesn't exercise, won't have lactic acid issues. FUCKSTICK

"That girl" works 35 hours a week and goes to school full time, so I'd say she's pretty active. So don't assume. You know the saying.
Anyways, I guess it's the strain of my hefty upper body on my legs that causes ME to get these same cramps, right? wrong.

Zanagan is sort of right. I used to get cramp in my calf and feet quite a lot. Then I started working out and has been fine ever since. Its got nothing to do with "eating cupcakes before bed" though.

You say working 35 hours a week and going to school full time like that's an active life style!
School = sitting behind a desk.
Work depends but I doupt it's that physically involved unless she's cutting down trees or building homes. Working out will get your body in better condition which leads to less lactic acid. Less lactic acid = fewer cramps.

School isn't just sitting at a desk, its helping the children, running after them, walking from class to class (if only you could see how big my school is) as well as weight training, and as for work, I've been working at a day care full of 4 and 5 year olds running around like nuts! ;oP So yeah I'm pretty active ...

And I still don't consider school active. Sports after school yes but school itself no. Weight training is a start but you need hard core cardio also.

I'm sorry, I have to say this. Flame me at will.
There is such a thing as common courtesy. Being on the internet does not excuse you from this. Just because the person isn't sitting in front of you -- And maybe, you would say it to their face -- But that doesn't mean you should.
You may have a valid point, or you may not. But when it comes down to it, you have a choice. Treat people like human beings, or treat people like text on a screen. I have zero respect for anyone that treats people like text on a screen. Maybe I'm guilty of it sometimes, but I would certainly hope if I ever did someone would call me out on it.
Consider yourselves called out, and you know who I'm talking to. People don't deserve to be treated like that, and I don't care how 'fat' or 'stupid' or 'ugly' or 'inbred' or whatever they are.
End rant.
Edited to add: None of my last comments are directed at anyone or anything. They're just examples of the things people say when they're being mean jackasses.

I exercise an hour a day, weights every other day with cardio, and cardio the other days, with Sundays off. I used to get cramps in my legs too, for some reason. I started taking a multivitamin, and a friend suggested bananas, it's seemed to work too.

Here, from web-MD.
Muscle cramps
A muscle cramp ("charley horse" or "stitch") is a strong, painful contraction or tightening of a muscle that comes on suddenly, lasting from a few seconds to several minutes. Soreness in the muscle may last for hours after the hard, tense cramp has stopped. Home treatment often relieves the pain.
The cause of muscle cramps is not always known. Muscle cramps may be brought on by a number of conditions or activities, such as:
Exercising. A muscle that is very tired, not well stretched, or held in poor posture may develop a cramp.
Overuse of muscles.
Fluid or mineral (electrolyte) imbalance. This imbalance may be from:
Exercise during hot weather ("exercise cramps" or "heat cramps"), causing loss of sodium, potassium, and fluid.
Dehydration caused by vomiting, diarrhea, sweating too much, or not drinking enough fluids. See the topic Dehydration.
Pregnancy. Cramps may occur because of decreased amounts of minerals such as calcium and magnesium, especially in the later months of pregnancy.
Medication side effects.
Exposure to cold temperatures, especially to cold water.
Muscle injury. If an injury seems to be causing the muscle cramps, see the topic Bone, Muscle, and Joint Injuries.
Overuse of muscles. Writing ("writer's cramp"), typing, or playing piano may bring on hand cramps.
Muscle cramps in legs
Pointing the toes. Leg and foot cramps often occur while lying in bed at night with the toes pointed or while stretching. Wearing high heels or kicking during swimming can have the same effect.
Pain in the calf that feels like a muscle cramp may be cause by decreased blood flow to the leg muscles. Although there is no actual muscle contraction, symptoms may include cramping pain in the calf that comes on with activity and is relieved by rest. Cramping pain often begins after walking a certain distance. This condition may be caused by peripheral vascular disease.

Doesn't say anything about weight at all..
