View Full Version : Router recommendations
I am looking for router recommendations please. I am looking for a 802.11g router than is backwards compatible to 802.11b. This will be networking 3 home computers, all desktops for a friend. One new computer (just bought) and two very old machines running win2000 and win 98, the new machine is running XP of course. Looking to spend under $80.
These are the routers I was considering but the reviews of them weren't flattering.
Netgear WGR614
Netgear WGT624
Linksys WRT54G
I am also looking for recommendations on desktop wireless cards.

How are the LInksys routers for phone interference? I hear that because they operate on 2.4ghz frequency there are issues with it interfering with cordless phones?
I have read some really poor reviews of the linksys desktop wireless cards, problems with poor performance and that they don't work with older computers?

I have been using linksys routers/cards for a few years, never had problems, ever.

Uh, all G routers operate on 2.4ghz, so that's not just Linksys.
Linksys ftw, though. Don't buy Netgear.

Whats wrong with Netgear? I have a Netgear 802.11b wireless router that works fine.

Both netgear and linksys are fine for home use. I am, however, partial to the linksys.

Regarding phone interference from 2.4 ghz portables.
Yes, they can interfere greatly with wireless networks. I have had to get rid of one group of 2.4 phones from one line and am getting rid of the second presently. The upgrade to 5.8 on the one group already helped increase the stability and so am following up by getting rid of the last 2.4 we have at the next decent sale.

Who has land lines anymore? My hard line is for my security system. Cell phones FTW!

Linksys has outstanding customer support IMHO and I love their products. I owned a wired router in college, then upgraded to the WRT54G wireless, which I still use. I also set up my parents with a WRT54G and they love it. I used my old wired four port one up in our winter house and all three work extremely well. I have had experience with netgear, its in my step parent's house. While we have 2.4g phones in both houses, it destroys the netgear reception but the linksys router seems to have no problem. We have linksys g cards for me, my mom and my dad's laptops, all work great, sturdy too. I have not tested the wierd three antenna bounce the signal linksys router.
I'm very partial to Linksys for wireless and wired routers. Also, I like their firewall software in the router, very intuitive (at least to me).

IMO, Linksys makes a better product than Netgear in terms of reliability. Linksys was also bought by Cisco, which is a plus.
Or you could spend alot more money and buy a Safe@Office box.

As far as cards go, I'm partial to 3Com or Linksys.

Cell phones suck. The reception sucks compared to land lines.

I went the cheap route and got netgear wireless cards for my laptops.
I can't tell you how much they suck. No signal range, constant drops.
I put in a linksys card, and my signal at least doubled.
I also used a third party firmware for my linksys router to give me more options/power boost. Alchemy V1.0 from Sveasoft

One feature I love about US Robotics routers are the detachable antennas so you can add on low gain long range antennas for a cheap price.
