After years of stalling, excuses, reasoning, and lack of funds, I have finally become...
A college student!
It's online through Maryland's Distance Education program but it is a start to get my gen ed done before I am back in America. I am really excited and today is the first "official" day of class.
Only taking one this term (English 101) so I can see how I handle the class work with my daughter and other things going on. Next term I hope to do two or three depending.
Better late then never I guess!

Enjoy yourself!
Man those are good times.

Thankyou both! We already have our first assignment which is just a quick question and answer type thing but interesting. Our DE program uses WebTycho for its class system so playing around with that some as well. It has a type of forum system, areas for teachers to post assignments, reading material, grades, schedules, etc... So since this is still new to me it has some fun neat factor for me ;) lol
The teacher seems cool and something I like is from what I have seen and heard of colleges; often there are so many students in one class you are lucky if the teacher even knows your name let alone gets to know you. In this setting we get to know each other better by posting replies and chatting through our forum. The teacher has already responded individually to each posted intro from the students.
Not to mention we make our own schedules!! For any class that doesn't need hands on training I've got to say this is looking good!

That's awesome Caiy! I'm sure you'll do great. :D
Congrats!
Becareful with online schools. Make sure their accredidation is okay with other major schools though. It's why I'm worried about online ones.
Good work tho.

Haha I was all ready to defend Maryland from Terminator X's post until I scrolled down and saw the "Go Terps!".
Maryland is no Virginia, but it's still a decent state. At least 10x as nice as Delaware, at least.

My intent was to insult Snapp, my appologies, Mich.

Thanks, you guys!
And Maryland is accredited all the way. The Military has a special program through them as well which is why many overseas military families take DE through them. But I will be able to take any credits I earn there to whichever school I may decide to attend once back in America.
Congrats for throwing yourself back into the fray. You'll do great.

CLEP is your friend. I got rid of all my freshman classes by testing out of them, gen ed stuff is almost always testable. Good luck, one of these years I'll get started on it again.
Accredited and accredited might not be the same thing. For instance, there is a school, ITT Tech and the University of Pheonix that are very much accredited, but by recently created accreditation agencies. All fine and dandy, I suppose, many other schools and employers may not recnognize these newer agencies. I think there are even some legal battles going on with people blowing lots on education (probably not in your case since you are military) and coming out with degrees that arn't recognized in many important places.
Don't let me discourage you, just make sure you keep your eyes open.

I appreciate it Arkans! They had paperwork to show that their classes and degrees were valid but I could check online, too.
:)
What are you planning on eventually getting your degree in?

I'm going to school online as well through University of Pheonix and am now starting my second block of classes for General Edu. My goal is a degree in Human Resources Management.
Congrats Caiy! I'm doing it too and it's definately different in a distance learning environment but the work is challenging and I love the convenience it gives me since I still am a stay-at-home mom, etc. If you ever wanna chat about things, IM me! :smooch:

Yeah, there was a big stink raised a few years back about recent Devry grads not receiving up to date material in classrooms so they weren't getting what they were paying for.
However, I have known ITT grads to come out of school getting job offer at companies such as Motorola and the like.

WTG Caiylania!
But wouldn't you rather have a nice Physics course than some stinky English program?

Bastard! :(
Ha! I'm not the only DE poster (when Michi's in school)!
It's more of a problem when trying to get higher degrees (Master's and Doctorates) than it is getting jobs. Of course, when getting a job when you have a bachelor's that anyone can get and a lot of people have (psychology, art history) school will make more a difference. Less of one if you're sporting a Business degree.
Anyway, the problem with ITT Tech and University of Pheonix is people were applying to graduate schools and were pretty much told to go fuck themselves, because none of their courses were under the same accredidation agency as the graduate schools were.
The school I go to, Bridgewater State College, will not accept credits from ITT Tech and stuff, despite ITT Tech students paying the same or greater tuitions due to the agencies.

- Arkans Ouch, that sucks. Well, with Devry it was the same thing for a while. But as far as ITT Tech went students who weren't pursuing higher degrees of education were filling the technical jobs in Illinois at least with minimal problems. It was the Devry grads running into the bulk of difficulty. They do have the Keller Graduate school so that may be a reason why there wasn't as big a fuss as the ITT bachelor grads were running into.
It really sucks when the student has to suffer after they've done everything they've been told they needed to for sucesses with their career.
It really does, DeV, that is why I will never support online schools in anyway shape or form. Your best bet is just trying to get into a school that has been around for a while or is a State school (and not even all State schools are that great, I got lucky).
Either way, do take care with your education time and dollar and research, research, research!

Well, my plans are to take my Associates degree from University of Pheonix and then move on to a different, more long-standing school for the rest of my educational needs if I have to. Surely, I won't have difficulty getting another college to accept my Associates from Pheonix.

Congrats Caiy. Hope you ace it all :D
You'd be surprised, Jolena. Make sure the accredidation agency that Pheonix uses is the one recognized as your BA/BS school choice or you might be wasting cash.

Fuckin' A.
Anyway, the best thing about online college courses is cheating on tests. With no one to supervise you on a test you can use whatever resources you want to. ;)

Thanks for all the great support! You guys are the best. And Ebondale, when we take a test it is at a supervised location. Since Maryland is doing this program with the Military they have people who give the proctored exams in person.
I know a lot of colleges online are risky at best, but this is a real college doing an online program for benefit of Military families, etc... so they have to have certain credentials to even be allowed to teach on the bases over here. They have many teachers who are actually stationed in Europe to teach in room classes as well.
And as for Physics... are you nuts??? No way for me!
