an elaborately carved birch case

Deeply carved into the sides of the case are the spreading figures of leafless trees, the bare branches of each interlocking with those of its closest neighbors. A thin layer of clear lacquer overlays the pale wood, lending it a faintly reflective shine. Two brass hinges serve to join the smooth lid to the body of the case, and a long ball latch holds it fast when closed.
