I'm trying to imagine how this scenario unfolded. I've been on a stairwell that had many a people running frantically, but to have so many people that 7 lay dead... it wrecks my mind! I just can't see this happening.
BEIJING (AP) - A stampede on a stairwell at an elementary school in southwest China killed seven children and injured 37, state media reported Wednesday.
Students were leaving their evening classes Tuesday when the stampede occurred in the stairwell, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.
Seven children died at the scene, it said. Of the 37 children who were injured, five suffered serious injuries and were being observed by hospital doctors.
The cause was under investigation. The school - in Tongjiang, 740 miles southwest of Beijing - was built last year. Authorities told Xinhua they doubted there was a structural collapse.
