50 ranks of mana on top of 1xing it will cost ya 400 mtps, get yer total mana +50, which results in another 8 per pulse. I always look at mana in a per pulse setting. Your return on investment? 1 point of mana per pulse for every 50 mtps.

Now, imagine you're 1x in EMC. For the same 400 mtps, you could get another 66 ranks of EMC, which will boost yer per pulse by +6 mana, aid in infusing scrolls, help with 719, animating dead, drop the cost of FI from 18 to 16....just food for thought. I dunno, I just don't consider doubling hp worth the points, but that is my opinion.
