I've been gone from the game for quite some time now and returned to check out all the fun changes. Rather than re-open my old account, I decided to try starting up with the free 30 days to see whether or not I want to continue playing.
So, I started up a Two-Hander Paladin and managed to get him to level 6 in not too long. However, I'm finding it incredibly difficult to upgrade any of his gear. My mental price list is so out-dated that I actually expected I could get a decent white ora two hander for under 25k.
I suppose what I'm trying to get at is: How can a youngin make a decent bit of coin to purchase the upgrades necessary for some hunting? It's so overwhelming compared to the GemStone of old where mithril weapons and shields could be found for 3-5k.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

To start, welcome back!
Actually, you should be able to find lower end gear cheaper than any time previously.
Since you were gone, they've implemented playershops. A player has created a website for an easy way to search for items and that can be found here:
http://playershops.com/
You can probably check with the Mentors too. They usually accept old gear to pass off to new players.

Thanks for your timely response. There's some decent stuff out there that I'd love to get my hands on, but it's still a bit pricey (I script hunted rats so my funds are rather low).
I suppose this is the wrong folder for this question, but could someone recommend a hunting area around sixth train where some decent coin could be made? It'd be much appreciated.

I second the monkeys. If your swing is high enough, Mants and thraks are good too.
And about your woes, I just sold a 4x handaxe on gs4.net for 100 silver. Sometimes the deals, they are a plenty. Others? Not so much.
:)
Welcome back!

Monkeys for the win. Totally. I made serious money in RR with my level 10 cleric there.
If you can't make a lot of silvers right off the bat, don't worry too much, you could go through the entire game with 0x gear if you wanted to and survive. You aren't going to be off the ball if you don't upgrade immediately.

Thank you all for your information. I hunted rats a bit longer, but decided I needed a change of pace regardless of cash.
Last time I was in RR, it involved the kobold village and a giant boot. Apparently, RR is now a city down by Solhaven. I went there, but my way into the city was blocked by some stupid cast iron fish. I tried doing tons of emotes to the damn thing, but I couldn't figure the puzzle out. Any help?

Heh, it's not a puzzle. You need to buy a ticket in marshtown (in silvers, not a note) from Jyhm. I think the directions, from the fish, are n, e, e, n, n, nw, w, go door. Or something close to that.
Anyway, get your ticket from Jyhm, go back to the fish. Wait for the boat to arrive.
Welcome to traveling in GS4. It blows.

I waited more than an hour just for the boat to show up, only to tell me they weren't taking passengers.

when the boat comes in it drops the passengers it has then goes and hides for about a half an hour.. it then comes back and picks up the people for the voyage..... You just have to keep waiting...
