I tried to make some assemblance of chronological order.
We're talking from 1914 onward...
So, no Braveheart, no The Patriot, and no Glory. Sorry, but you have to draw the line somewhere.
This was really tough for me to decide.
I had to go with Platoon though...

A Bridge too Far
I liked Hart's War, cuz it shows the Germans being Honorable and Americans being scumbags. But out of those choices? Black Hawk Down cuz it was sad.

FMJ. My dad said it was a very accurate depiction of what life was like over there.

Full Metal Jacket, hands down.
Another very good movie is Hamburger Hill. If you like black and white, Tora Tora Tora ain't all that bad as well.

for action and "realism" saving private ryan showed me what war was like:
run and pray you won't get hit
Man when I saw that movie on theater, i didn't wanted to blink, too much information, too much action

I'll go with SP on this one, Glory was pretty awesome. AND Matthew Broderick died in that movie. What more do you want?

If you're going back to civil war movies, I would say Gettysburg was a decent one.
The scope of the battle scenes was awesome, although they were a little watered down.
Gods and Generals was very true to the period. Slow and tedious. Battle scenes sucked.
Glory was a good movie with more realistic battles. The first part depicting the battle of Antietam/Sharpsburg was great.

My first post said all the movies are from 1914 wars and onward, and I specifically listed Glory as one of the great movies not included.
If you include Glory, then maybe you have to include the Patriot,.. then Braveheart... I figured for comparative purposes, WWI onward.
Sorry to you Glory fans.

What is a good war movie anyway?
realism?
I don't like braveheart because all "good heroes" looks like invicible, they kill around 100 persons each, sounds very idiotic.
Patriot rocks for that, attrition war (napoleon's way)
Special effect?
story?

You just like the Patriot 'cause the French are the heroes at the end, Xcalibur. :P

Edited: I think realism makes a good war movie. Watering it down for the masses doesn't portray what really happened and therefore doesn't honor the memory of the people who actually participated.

They saved your butt, like it or not ;)
I just hate those movie.. I know Mel is good looking (although he's like 20 years old older than the real "william wallace" ) but damn.. I really doubt the guy killed that many people and i find it funny that, since Mel was the productor, he "labels" him as a butcher.

Ok i voted for Black Hawk Down.. it made me cry .. im not HUGE on war movies , but i think it was very well done and i did enjoy it .
We Were Soldiers was amazing. It made me well up too. The book's even better, I'd advise checking it out.
I find, on average, most movies about Vietnam encompass the same concepts, though. Out of any war that has produced a number of movies, I would say that Vietnam's films could most easily be placed on a Bell curve.
Of the movies listed, I've give Black Hawk Down my highest thumbs up. Excellent realism. No one was a Rambo. The production and editing of the film were awesome. I loved the gritty look and the shots that were obviously filmed with a hand-held camera. It put you in the action.

I'm going with Apocalypse Now, because it is about something so much more than just war.
It isn't out to glorify any country, any individual, or any war. On the contrary, it is more of a psychological movie that shows how deep inside we're all pretty desperate people who can sink to the worst lows.

Thought of some other movies to add to the list..
Dead Men Walking (I think thats what it was called..), and Bat 21. Those where both great movies also. Bat 21 is a clasic for me.

Enemy At The Gates- An amazing movie that showed quite well just how horrific war can be and also because it showed a side of WWII that most americans no nothing about. The eastern front of WWII was true all out war, and this movies does well in capturing that feel.
BlackHawk Down- another movie that does a wonderful job of showing how chaotic and insane war really is.
We were Soldiers- was excellent and as Peam I think said an even better book that goes out of its way to give credit to the courage and determination of the soldiers of both sides.
Tora Tora Tora- for being way ahead of its time in giving credit where credit was due for the remarkably planned and executed attack on Pearl Harbor. If you saw it when they have showed it with commentary on the history channel, they mention how the producers had to add in the sequence at the end about "rousing of a mighty giant" as it was seen by some as entirely too negative. The thing to remember is that at that time of i think 1969 WWII was only as far back in time to them as Vietnam is to us.
Schindlers List- makes me cry every time I watch it. It will always be a special film to me as I remember going to see it for a second time in the theatre because my grandfather wanted to go see it. His own father emmigrated to the US from Germany so his feelings were of such sadness. His crying while watching that movie will always be a powerful memory.

I have not seen Full Metal Jacket yet. I think I will watch it this weekend since everyone seems to think it's one of the best. I hate it when I am out of the loop.
