I've generally stayed out of the Katrina threads (and most of the off topic threads), mainly because I have very strong views about and I don't want to piss you fuckers off and have you take it out on my character in game. (Yes, it does happen all the time and we all know it)

But I felt this worth mentioning... a fundraiser held at my school that didn't go as planned:

Fundraising party ends early with $1,000 in fines
City code enforcer cites hurricane relief event twice for excessive noise
By Emily Yahr

September 20, 2005

Senior Brady Nolan’s Hurricane Katrina relief party last Thursday seemed to be a phenomenal success. It was only 8:15 p.m., and there was already $1,000 in donations from the crowd in the backyard having a great time as a band played.

That was, until the police came and gave Nolan a $500 citation for a noise violation.

After the party was broken up, Nolan and his friends decided to try again, and moved the party to another house on Guilford Road.

About 30 minutes later, the same police officer showed up, and wrote Nolan another $500 citation.

College Park’s noise violation policy is in effect 24 hours a day, seven days a week, said Bob Ryan, director of Public Services. The only thing that changes is noise can’t be louder than 55 decibels from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m., and at all other times, the maximum is 65 decibels. A noisy restaurant creates about 70 decibels of sound.

A code enforcement officer is always on call Thursdays through Saturdays from 6 p.m. until 4 a.m. in the late spring and early fall, according to the City of College Park website.

Nolan and Matt Brant, a senior criminal justice major who organized the party, said they were shocked at what happened because they took every precaution necessary to make sure the party wasn’t breaking laws.

Ryan said the students should have contacted the city of College Park in advance about the party.

“We have made an attempt to work with groups who were having fundraisers,” Ryan said. “The same [noise violation] rules apply, but students can work with a city to find a good venue.”

Nolan and Brant are still furious, and said the incident is the epitome of what is wrong with the city of College Park.

“There are people on the streets getting beaten and shot, and there are six cops breaking up a party that’s raising money for victims of a hurricane,” Nolan said.

They are more concerned, however, about the amount of money they didn’t raise because the party was broken up.

From the way things were going, they could have made well over $5,000, Nolan said.

Nolan and Brant intend to give every dollar they raised — about $1,700 — to the Red Cross to benefit the hurricane victims. The $1,000 they owe in noise violations will be paid out of their own pockets.
