So I am working on my writting assignment and I can't find a word. I know it's there but I just can't think of it.
Here is the sentence:
"Misrepresenting one’s character is not the only fraud that might invoke ******* consent to marry. "
******** = "an otherwise absent"

"Uninformed" comes to mind, but I'm sure that's not the word you're seeking. There's something hiding right behind my left temporal lobe, but I can't quite winkle it out. ;)

Heh. I will, hon. I hate it when this happens. There's a word lurking in the shadows, but every time I reach for it, the damned thing bolts!
The Latin phrase "ex ante" might serve, since it means "based on prior assumptions", but...that ain't it either, dammit!

You've got the exact idea I'm trying to articulate, though. I would use ex ante except that it's based on prior misrepresentations and not prior assumptions.

Unfounded?

I would say relative consent to marry, but relative has so many twisted meanings...
In this case one would have to argue the "comparative" aspect in which the consent resulting from fraud is not quite "up to standard" when compared to true consent.
It DOES result in consent.. but it's only relative of actual consent.
A stretch, but hell... I can't figure it out!

Close. The idea is that there is this foundation that is the result of fraud. So the consent is founded on misrepresentations and therefore would otherwise be absent. God this is bothersome!

I know what you're trying to say and can't think of it either. I might just reword the sentence. Something like:
"Misrepresenting one’s character is not the only fraud that might legally provide basis for an annulment of a marriage."

You could use the word "misguided", I suppose. It's still not what I'm looking for, I'm sure, since the little gong hasn't gone off in the back of my head to let me know that I've found what I was looking for amidst the clutter. ;)

Just stop trying to think of the word. It'll come to you.

Heh. Okay, a few words crawled out of their hiding places:
unwitting
inadvertent
misguided
I know there are still a few others in there, resisting all effort on my part to bring them forth. I shall follow Artha's advice and quit thinking about it. Perhaps, something will leap at me from the shadows. ;)

bigamous marriage?
cannot be annulled—it is void ab initio (not legal from its inception).

how about:
"Misrepresenting one’s character is not the only fraud that might vitiate consent to marry."
probably changes the underlying intent of the sentence too much.
I'll keep thinking...
