Actually, it comes from working with people from all over the English speaking world via the internet.

Some of the traders I work with are British, while several people I worked with on online games were Canadian, Scottish, and British. I tend to interchange spellings based on mood, as neither seems outwardly wrong to me :shrug: .

I believe the vampire/goth correlation you're thinking of is the common practice of some gothic people to use the spelling vampyre, rather than vampire.
