View Full Version : Kanye West & Bush

I have never liked this illiterate rapper but his comments couldn’t have been done in a more inappropriate forum. If Kanye wanted to voice his opinion regarding Bush and Hurricane relief, he could have done it at a press conference or better yet made a song about it.

For the record I have never been a fan of Bush, this isn’t about Kanye's comments, it is about when he choose to voice them.

Oddly enough, despite his dropout status I'd say Kanye's probably one of the more literate rappers these days. Despite that, this has been heavily discussed elsewhere in the forum.

Jolena

Yep i think I posted about it originally in the International Aid thread, or perhaps it was just "Aid" thread. Either way, it's been discussed.

Stick to discussing safety belts Kanye.

I have been out of town for a week, sorry I didn't know it had been discussed.

I agree. I have a daunting feeling he is going to do just that. Eek.

For the record I have never been a fan of Bush, this isn’t about Kanye's comments, it is about when he choose to voice them. I found it funny you used illiterate and Bush in the same sentence and failed to put two and two together. Seriously though he is one of the most non-illiterate rappers out at the present. His statements seemed to be based more off of emotion than anything else resembling logic at the time.

Also, for not being such a fan of Bush, you did in fact vote for him in the previous presidential election. If that doesn't make you a supporter I don't know what does.

Warriorbird
09-07-2005, 12:34 PM
It's cool. You're more than welcome to contribute to the three or four threads it's in. I'm certainly not a mod. I didn't mean to suggest it wasn't still relavent, because a lot of people are backing him up recently (David Banner and T.I. for example, as well as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton...who more of the threads seem to focus on).

I don't believe I said who I voted for in the last election.

I personally thought he was babbling incoherently in that red cross video with Mike Myers from the Sharpton thread. I was like "WTF were they thinking putting him in front of a camera?"

DeV

My apologies. I was as certain you did as I was that Tamral did not vote at all in the presidential election. Again, my bad for the misinformation.

Regardless of whether or not Kanye West is illiterate, he's an idiot for standing there and trying to make the whole thing about whether or not Bush cares about black people. I think it's bullshit the way that white people are "looking for food" but black people are "looters" in the media. But in reality that issue should not be first and foremost in anyone's mind. The issue that should be recognized right now is that all those people, regardless of race, need help.

Warriorbird
09-07-2005, 12:45 PM
Curiously enough, he was advocating that too.

Folks backing him up and inspired by him have raised quite a bit.

Parkbandit

He's a fucking rapper. Since when does his warped opinion mean shit to anyone? What a surprise, he did something inappropriate. I am shocked. Really I am.

People put too much weight into any celebrity comment.. no matter how retarded.

Personally, it made him look like a jackass.

Warriorbird

Shockingly enough... people tend to like celebrities and empathize with them. Our current governor of California and one of our former presidents come to mind when I find your statement funny, Parkbandit.

It depends on the opinion. If it's for/against the government, it's a big deal. If it's about religion or something, it hurts you. Look what happened to Cruise when he went on his Scientology binge. He's not the most liked person right now. Maybe he needs to trash Bush or something. :P

When said album sales come with a spike in connected charities I'd say so.

The Dixie Chicks crashed and burned after they criticized Bush. It isn't happening here.

I believe myself and PB are pointing out that his opinion should mean shit, and album sales don't change that.

Kanye West doesn't have a police record other than a bad traffic accident. He's decisively not gangsta.

He didn't make it through undergrad, but he's helped sell millions of records.

He's got that empathetic quality. I think it was Jay Z who said he was a, "real soulful dude." People like that can get away with outrageous things. Republicans should be glad he'll never end up in politics. Clinton had that same quality.

I like his music. I like the fact that his statement seems to have spurred action even if I think racism was the farthest thing from Bush's mind regarding Katrina. I like the fact that it's made Republicans get all self important. I think it's a good counter to their victim blaming (that horrible mayor and governor and city government! they clearly factor into Army Corps of Engineer decisions!) that some of the Republicans have gotten up to. There's a lot of problems out there regarding this. It isn't simple.

I think Gary Becker (http://www.becker-posner-blog.com/archives/2005/09/major_disasters.html) and Richard Posner (http://www.becker-posner-blog.com/archives/2005/09/katrina_cost-be.html) have added new ramifications that I'm still wrapping my head around... many people's statements on these issues are important. And if Hulkein attacks their credibility because they're bloggers... well... I'll laugh again today.

Sorry, but I don't connect with a drop out thug rapper.

I don't connect with a wacko that believes AIDS is a US Government created disease that was intentionally introduced into Africa to kill black people.

I don't connect with a wacko that believes that George W Bush doesn't like black people.. and that's why he intentionally 'dragged' his feet in responding to the hurricane in the south.

I didn't bother to read the entire thread (as usual). But, sounds like he put his foot in his mouth, especially at a bad time. Who ever looted T.V.'s, games, ect., was just stealing. Who ever looted food, blankets, and what ever needed to live, was just a survivor. I mean seriously, WTF are you going to do with that T.V.? Put it in your house that's now under water? People need to seriously think sometimes. I don't care what race you are, but stupidity doesn't need a color.

Yeah, it was stereotyping.

The stereotype that musicians (and actors) aren't overly educated or smart, and should stfu and stick to making their music, not making ridiculous claims or directing the public on how to think/act.
