I think trying to predict how anyone would react in a state of emergency is fucking retarded. Unless you have advanced training for that sort of situation, you really cant say. Tragedy will always bring about he heros and cowards of any society.

EDIT: DOES NOT WORK IN FIREFOX!

During the 1950s, government officials were very concerned that, in the event of an atomic attack, law and order would break down irrevocably as the nation dissolved into widespread panic and hysteria. In its publicity campaigns the Federal Civil Defense Administration wanted to frighten people sufficiently to encourage them to take part in drills, but not to incapacitate them with fear. The following government-sponsored quiz appeared in the August 21, 1953 issue of Collier's magazine as a supplement to an article about human behavior during nuclear attack. It was intended to help readers from becoming "victims of panic."

I was curious so I took it.

Your score is : 96
A score of less than 50 means you're likely to panic in an emergency. You're not very likely to panic if your score is between 50 and 70. If it's between 70 and 90, you're panic-resistant. Above 90, you're as close to being panic-proof as a human can be. Men should score a trifle higher than women.

Geez sylv, you sure you didn't cheat? When I took it I didn't bother doing the whole "fill in the dots" and I just filled in a minutes worth and multiplied out how long it would have taken me, I think I got a 76 or so.

I really just posted this to show the absurdity of the US government... but at least back then they were trying to prepare with the best intel they had, it might have been nice if more of the people in NO weren't panicing. (some of the test is fun too, but the end is just tedious)

The dots are staggered, so you need to do a real test, I think.

Hrm. Skirm, we're both of Firefox. Maybe thats the issue?

Celephais

#6
8 pints in a gallon.

8 * 3 gallons = 24 pints
24 pints / 4 parts = 6 pints per part
3 parts gas * 6 = 18 pints.

why it matters:
you're not supposed to write it out, you're supposed to do it in your head, it's about keeping track of numbers while performing opperations on other numbers... you tend to "erase" what you've already figured out and have to go back.

Because it's pretty basic thinking/reasoning/arithmetic skills under a stressful situation (running out of time).

or you can do what I did. 3x3 gallons look for a multiple of 9.

Good thing you're not in N.O.

I did notice that the javascript on that site is F'd up (a friend of mine put in a one minute to fill the dots.. got him a score in the 900's. according to the sheet at the end even finishing it in 1 minute shouldn't net you nearly that many points)

Bleh, retook the facker. I probably scored around an 80ish. I cheated with the gallon/pint thingy. Not exactly sure googling pints to gallons would be an option in an emergency.

ElanthianSiren
09-04-2005, 11:44 AM
Really, I don't think the pint thingy is a formula memory question.

It is more a question of taking hints. There is only one answer there than can be a multiple of nine. Since you need 3 gallons that are 3 parts gas, it has to be a multiple of nine.

Haha, I did that too. Then I figured that in the 50s, you'd be expected to know things like that because you don't have the internet yet so it's ok.

If you people who can't submit on ff post your answers here, someone can score it for you.

At the end of the test, after your score and all that, it gives a key. Actually, one sec:

How Panic Proof Are You?

Scoring (as outlined in Collier's)

Score each of the five parts separately, then divide the total by five. A score of less than 50 means you've likely to panic in an emergency. You're not very likely to panic if your score is between 50 and 70. If it's between 70 and 90, you're panic-resistant. Above 90, you're as close to being panic-proof as a human can be. Men should score a trifle higher than women.

I. Running down one column at a time, total the number of checks in each. Now multiply the total of the first column by three, the total number of checks in the second column by five, the total in the third column by seven and the total in the last column by ten. Add the revised totals of all the columns, and subtract the figure you get form 100. That's your score for Part I.

II. You get more points for answering some of the questions correctly than for others. The number of points for each question is shown in the right-hand column below.

QUESTION ANSWER POINTS
1 K 4
2 Saddened 4
3 AEIAC 4
4a True 4
4b True 4
4c False 4
4d True 4
4e True 4
4f False 4
4g False 4
5 d, e, h 6
6 18 6
7 Yes 7
8 67 9
9 OTTO 12
10 7 20

Add the number of points. Remember, you had a 10-minute time limit on this part of the test. If you finished in less than 10 minutes, increase your score by 10 per cent for each minute you saved.

III. The correct number of words in the paragraph is 103. If you got more or less than that total, take the number of words by which you missed, muliply your error by ten, and subtract that figure from 100. If you counted correctly, 100 is your score.

IV. There are 57 Xs in the circle. Score 20 points for each X you have counted over or under the correct figure, and subtract the total from 100.

V. How many seconds did it take you to place dots in all the zeros? Divide that number by two, and subtract the answer from 166.

I'm definitely only seeing 6 triangles in II.10.

Something like 85, but there's no one in the world who doesn't get the hell out of bed when a spider jumps onto his or her pillow.

Me. Spiders and other creatures don't scare me -- especially on the east coast. If I lived around populations of scorpions and black widows or couldn't ID a garter snake from a copperhead, I might freak out. I put spiders outside if I find them.

Your score is : 124.8

Heh.

On part one they didnt have the option of "throw head back and laugh in true maniacal fashion" so I had to keep choosing the "i would not be bothered" option.

I'm suprised I didnt fail part 2 because by then I had gotten bored with the test and was entertaining myself by finding various religous symbols inside the triangle thingy and formed elaborate creative theories about their placement within the greater symbol.

I guessed on the questions that sounded like 4th grade math word problems out of petpeevishness.

On part 5 I zoned out on afore mentioned triangle symbol theories and let motor functions take over.

I'm pretty sure that test is a bunch of BS.

Celephais
09-04-2005, 06:38 PM
I agree, total BS, panicing when you try to fill in little dots is a LOT different than wading through 4 feet of water. I posted it more for the 'panic prepardness' factor, do you guys think you are panic proof (so does the score reflect you)? and do you think it's possible for someone who is panic prone to prepare, provided prevelant professional preventative precautions?

Please.

Its my opinion that people *can* and should be trained for emergency situations. Because I know Ima little bit 'o coward on the inside. But it just takes alot of mind prep and discipline to be ready. And going through the motions until you dont have to think about them to do them is key.

ElanthianSiren
09-04-2005, 07:21 PM
I think no person can actually assess how they would behave in a situation like 911 or Katrina without being in that situation.

I will say this though: typically, under immense stress, I do tend to get what is akin to tunnel vision and start going through the motions of what needs to be done unemotionally. Being emotional in a dangerous/threatening/important situation is not desireable.

I personally, have never had to deal with being trapped inside crumbling buildings or staring at water levels as they were rising to the balcony of my house. Simply put: until I'm in a situation like that, I don't think it can be gauged how I would react.

Well, I know I'm not panic proof because yesterday the upstairs plumbing was causing the downstairs plumbing to back up and here it was a holiday weekend. So, I call the people that were out here the last time that happened and they don't even have an emergency number set up. (they usually do) Then my daughter's boyfriend got a number from his dad and called them and they were open AND don't charge OT for emergency situations. It's not happening today and the plumber's van broke down and he's running way behind but when it first happened yesterday I was freaking. (I won't go into the gross details) Then, I took a minute and thought about the people on the Gulf Coast and their nightmare and what a spoiled bitch I am because I might have to pee in my backyard tonight.

So yes I panic. But I did get a handle on it.
