View Full Version : Why the Constantine movie can't help but suck when compared to the Hellblazer comic

I was surfing around livejournal groups a bit earlier after reading a college friend's blog and I found this comic, "Hold Me", written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Dave McKean. When you compare Gaiman's writing and the portrayal of John Constantine... it's two different worlds... two massively different worlds. I can't knock Rachel Weisz's hotness, but damn, what was Hollywood thinking with that movie? What is Hollywood thinking with most movies it lets out these days?
Anyway, here it is. Warning... it does take a bit to load. This is the full comic.

I thought the movie had an interesting concept, cool special effects, and an extremely mediocre presentation.
Yawn.

Yawn.
I thought the idea was really neat too.
I didnt go see it due to the mediocre reviews though.
I'll have to rent it now.

I still have quite a few issues of Constantine. In fact, I remember the one WB posted and may still have it. Great series. Gaiman wrote well for it, then Warren Ellis I think it was picked up the baton and ran with it. The art was always low-key which was a nice change from the colorful superpeople books.
I’ll check out the movie when I get a chance. Almost bought it.
[edit to correct Ellis’ first name before Stay flips out on me]

I don't think the movie was terrible terrible. I considered it about average. Rachel Weisz was hot as hell. I just didn't consider the character Keanu played John Constantine.

Her yumminess did not outweigh Reeves bringing Neo that much into the role.

I'm not going to say he deserved an Oscar or anything, but his performance was hardly as bad as the Neo level.
Also, I didn't think Ms. Weisz was hot. Now Gabriel... Especially when she was wearing that white strappy thing.
Seeing Rachel Weisz get dragged through walls and thrown out a window is what sold me on the movie.
I enjoyed it overall though.
