View Full Version : Stealing made easier in the Landing
THIEVES OF THE LANDING REJOICE! ALL OTHERS BEWARE!
Reported earlier today by town officials: Some areas are not quite as safe as they once were. The constable was quoted as saying, "It is with a heavy heart that we have to cut back on security. Citizens should use caution in some areas with their valuables."

The stealing changes were pretty ridiculous. GS went from really easy to avoid getting stolen from to nobody steals.

Oooh. Seriously, stealing in GS is pathetic. DR was my first Simu game, and believe me... nothing in GS can compare to stealing there.

I make anywhere from 5k-100k an hour stealing, when I steal. And at my level, that is more than I can make hunting...

I believe it's a new verb thingy.
>justice status
You sense that your surroundings are calm enough that the town constable would notice if you did anything illegal.
*edited to add - I've used this verb about 300 some odd times and I've never gotten anything but that message.

This all depends on the marks and whether or not they are standing around in the park. Stealing GS4 sucks big time, even IF you can steal more items and from different containers.
Alfster
09-14-2005, 05:38 PM
Actually, stealing in gs4 is more profitable than it was in gs3 because you can target what you want. Of course, the downside is you can only steal from the same mark about 6-10 times before they'll catch you.
In this system, you're going to get caught at times. Plain and simple. That's why when I steal, I'll keep switching marks after every pull and I've seen a dramatic drop in the number of times I've been caught.
The difference between gs3 and gs4 is in gs4 you actually have to be smart about it, not just type steal <person>
The Ponzzz
09-14-2005, 05:44 PM
Naw that verbs been there. A few of the non stealable rooms in the landing were lifted! Though I only found one.
And I don't steal from the small park. I steal in icemule, teras and vaalor, better gems.
I have yet to steal from Illistim, kinda wondering how I would do now adays... Prolly get killed a few times for sure...
And one more thing. GS3 was easier to steal, but the parameters sucked!

What the hell did that have to do with our discussion? I enjoy playing my warrior in GS when I do play. My DR account is usually open at the same time. I just find it ridiculous when people claim GS stealing is overly powerful.

This change was done several months ago, in response to complaints about invasions.
When there is an invasion or some other threat to the town, the message changes to something along the lines of "You sense your surroundings are in an uproar to the point that the Guard Captain would not notice any minor transgressions"
In other words, ewave, major ewave, focused implode or anything else you want in town without getting arrested for endangering public safety.
You will still get arrested if you murder someone in town though, so don't get any funny ideas... I've done it.

I fail to understand what stealing in DR has to do with stealing in GS. Aside from the fact that they are both text based games, there really isn't anything similar to them.
I don't understand why that would be used in a discussion about gemstone.

My problem with stealing in GS4 is that when it was still GS3, my 70-something train empath who was singled in it - could steal. And could steal well, because of the number of ranks he had.
In GS4, if you're not doubled, it's not worth it.
I didn't do it for the money, i did it out of boredom. Plus it's always nice to:
1) Steal from a sorc/wizard/(some sort of caster) and have them think you're a rogue and cast at you and realize that your TD is higher than their CS.
2) Act appalled that they would think an empath could steal. I mean how could I possibly hide with all these wounds/scars? (yes, some people could be easily convinced that you had to hide to be able to steal).
3) Pick someone clean and then tip them off that you saw the only rogue in the room digging in their pockets. Sit back and enjoy the fun.

Everyone in Icemule walks around with open containers, but, how succesful have you been there? The reason that I ask is that Icemule is generally very good about lynching theives and running them out of town. Last one we caught got killed about 5 times in a row before he left.

Stealing in TC is normally very rewarding. I can usually pull about 10k between hunts. The group mentality towards stealing gets annoying, but luckilly (skillfully) I've never been the center of that kind of attention.

LOL.. TC was a great place to steal from.. 2nd only to Falgrin's Park.
I certainly don't remember being "run off"

Anyone who thinks stealing in GS4 is tough knows shit about stealing to begin with and should reroll into an empath. :P
To me.. stealing was never a method of gaining material wealth (I think using Wezas' program I gained like 2 million in like 4 months worth of logs.. I could make MUCH more hunting) it was about initiating a conflict roleplay. I LOVE the fact that I could actually get caught. It was next to impossible to get caught in GS3.
The stealing changes were the best change to happen with GS4 in my opinion and I am glad that someone in Simu is still making changes to the mechanics.
Now all they have to do is make the following changes.. and hell, I might even come back for them:
1) A low level empath or cleric should NOT be able to make it impossible for an extremely skilled thief to hide or steal. Makes zero sense.
2) Get rid of the pseudo-sanctuaries. It is clear that the only reason some of these even exist is because a thief bothered a GM's empath character, so they made TSC, the Dais, etc... thief-proof. Stoopid.
3) Make gold rings stealable.
4) Get rid of the neck pouches being thief-proof. It's bad enough you think that having 30 pounds dangling from your neck is in character.. but that Falgrin couldn't take something from it? Come now.

I don't remember Falgrin being run off either. That's not to say it hasn't happened though, I can recall near 10 thieves who have been "run off". It really depends on getting caught of course, and then who is there when you are caught.

TSC is no longer permasancted. I usually tend to sanct, especially when some dummy's making a ruckus, but I'd hazard a guess that 50% of the time there isn't a sanct.

Very successful, one sorcerer has caught me, but there were 3 of us stealing and he was so intuned with killing the others I was grabbing riftshards until I couldn't anymore.
I have yet to be lynched, and I steal everytime I'm logged.
Yeah, if you can get away with it go for it. Chiv usually spots most people because everyone thinks he's a stupid warrior and he's 2x in perception. The perception that Icemule is safe leads to the people with gems leaving their containers open.

I think it's hilarious when you are checking people out in the park and see that they are day dreaming...then you realize hey, they didn't close thier containers. I once lifted 12 blue/black crystals out of one sack off a character sleeping in the park.
My favorite place is Vaalor though just because half the town is protected from stealing. Who gives a shit about the wealth, the fun is rping and finding a way to get them out of the sanct.
I have to agree with Park though, it is tons of fun to get caught. I'd scope out older characters just so I would get caught.
I never really stole much to begin with though, maybe pick two days out of a month to go on a stealing rage with friends. I pretty much stopped though.

I use it in a discussion about Gemstone because said other game survives fine with a massively more robust stealing system. The GS system bores me in comparison.

2020 marks including ones who were empty.
Because of my laptop crash at my last job, I've got to call my buddy who's the lan-ops guy there and see if he can pull all my logs from the backup.
Might already have been deleted since I've left, though.
As for coming back, right now I haven't had time to even play WoW much. And WoW, in my case, keeps my interest more then GS3/4
