View Full Version : Hunting seems hard

I may be spoiled by swinging a two hander with a paladin but I'm having issues with my sorcerer. This is my first sorcerer, and I've been away from the lands for a really long time. My eldest character is a rogue, so most of this stuff is new to me. With the changes to ambushing, I've just been having more fun experimenting with other professions.
First question, is there a CS calculator out there for GS IV? I've been having trouble finding sites that aren't broken links etc. I changed my training around recently (or it could have been the stats) and lost 5 or 6 CS.
Secondly, my sorcerer is only level 6 so far but I can never, ever get fried. I have a CS of 62, and run out of mana way before I get halfway fried at the graveyard. Does that ever get better? What I mean is, are there level gaps where it's hard to find low td critters?
Here are my stats/info if that does any good. I still have fixskills and stat fixes left, so training suggestions are helpful too. As far as goals, I'm looking to hunt decently, and I might be interested in scroll infusion later. I've tried brawl/shield but can't really punch any thing to death, and runestaff is about the same.
Training Ranks (at current level 6):
Armor: 3
Physical Fitness: 7
Arcane Symbols: 14
Magic Item Use: 7
Spell Aim: 14
Harness power: 11
Elemental control: 7
Spirit control: 7
Sorcerer lore Necro: 7
Perception: 7
Climbing: 7
Spells:
ME = 3
MS = 3
Sorc = 8
Stats (these are for level 6, can't remember command to say base ones):
Str = 61
Con = 42
Dex = 68
Agi = 72
Dis = 82
Aur = 83
Log = 68
Int = 62
Wis = 82
Inf = 62

Takes a long time before you can really fry on your own as a sorc. Try group hunting.

Well that's good to know, I guess I didn't do any thing wrong stat or training wise. It must be one of those you'll grow into it later type of things.
I read some where that people would just cast once at stuff and leave, letting others kill it. However, with the huge decrease in landing population, I don't think any one kills the stuff I hunt, hehe. Not to mention the problem isn't killing, it's hitting the damn thing to begin with.
Ah well, I'll keep at it. Thanks.

You should probably just go OHE/Shield until you are near the end of your migration period... unless that would go against your RP.

My sorceress had a hard time frying at first too. Level 11 or so she started at wraiths and was able to fry really quickly off of them. It does get easier, really!

My sorceress used her sword as often as her spells if not more for at least ten levels or so.

Bah! My post got erased.
1. Used Twisted/Bone wands. These will help you fry by conserving mana.
2. Use Heavy Quartz orbs. These will bost your CS even over 10 as long as you are under level 20.
3. Make sure you are channeling Mana Disrupt from offensive with one hand open. This will allow you to get the most damage possible from the spell.
4. Try to hunt next to a node/mana node, and catch pulses while hunting to keep your mana supply high.
5. Once you come of age, get a sorcerer to teach you sacrifice. It is a great way to replenish your mana and finish off a kill.
6. Join and master COL. The good Council will give you all the mana you could need with sign of wracking.

CoL is your friend because Sign of Wracking is your friend.
Using wands is excellent advice. Also, don't try to be a pure caster for awhile, you'll know when it's the right time and you're whooping ass without the sword. Hang in there, you kind of have to focus on long-term goals instead of short-term ones, but it's worth it.

Thanks for all the replies. I can tell the class is fun, it just gets so frustrating at times, hehe.

Being a young sorcer might be one of the harder classes to start out as. I remember how frustrated I was when I was for like the first 10 or so levels. I used LOTS AND LOTS of bone wands and quartz orbs.
But alas, it is far worth it. Soon you will be frying in 10 minutes completely on your own spellups and mana supply. At really good hunting spots you can fry so quickly its ridiculous.
My suggestions, start working on CoL now. It's a sorcerer's best friend, I essentially have 3x my actual mana pool.
So at 32 I can spend all 120 of my mana, sign of wracking down to 5 spirit, spend another 120, and hopefully regain 1 spirit in the meantime then I have 120 more.
This allows us to do mana-intensive hunting(which I am currently NOT doing). Mana intensive hunting is running around imploding or dark catalysting everything in site which, in the right areas, allows us to fry at extreme speeds.
In other words, the life of a sorcerer is tough at first(which I think is good, to discourage the weak). But after you get over the initial hump, its all downhill from there.

Also, I forgot which level, but I remember as soon as I could get my DS high enough to where I couldnt get hit in offensive with nothing in my hands killing Ghost Wolfs in Valor was amazing.
I think it was around 10-15 trains I was able to do this. It was such amazing exp I did it until 20 or so. You may need to use statues and anything else you can get to get your defense up there, but when you can run around the ghost wholf area and blast them to hell. There are lots of them, and I think I could kill them in one shot of 705 and one 702 towards the end.
At level 82 I can do "mana intesive hunting" and fry off one head of mana using soley focused implosion. I am a Voln sorcerer and pretty much 1x in HP. Good stuff.

Sweet. 82, good god. I mean, you are one...a god.
I still think once you obtain a certain level you should be able to fight the town NPCs. This would essentially allow a situation like "A crazed sorcerer wandered down from his haunted castle in the Lyserian Hills to wreak havoc on the townspeople".
Would be soooo fun for the sorcerer, and fun for the townspeople to defend the town against a Massive, god like madman.

I switched to Voln around 40. definately had plenty of mana that it was never a problem. Of course then they nerfed the voln talents and I was WTFPWND

Ah, bone wands. My absolute favorite.
Voln isn't bad for a Dark Elf sorcerer like myself. The spirit situation sucks for us and I'm usually batting around 800+ spins since I have no need for symbol of courage or protection. I use symbol of healing and symbol of holiness for my hunting partners when needed. Preserving yourself and sending out a symbol of need is nice, but pretty useless when you get to higher levels and people know where you just bit it.

I believe there was some change made to this such that if you leave the immediate area that the creature is in, you don't get the experience for the kill. This prevents people from just wounding a bunch of things then kicking back in town.
Could always underhunt and channel 702 at rats.
If you're friends with any wizards, see if they can duplicate your unused twisted/bone wands.

I dont see how anyone could think starting a sorcerer now days is hard. It's 200% easier now then it used to be.

Fallen gave great advice. I still use orbs and wands if I'm having a sucky hunt with low rolls so wasting more mana than usual. You don't need to be in COL. I'm not and do okay anyway. The other big piece of advice I'd give for the lower levels is to not wait too long to go back out to hunt. If you go out when you're still half full you'll probably fry with your mana. I'd say things start getting easier about level 12 and start really getting fun about level 20.
