Anyone got any good recommendations for any strategy games in a space/sci-fi setting? Turn based or RTS, though I'd much prefer a game with building, R&D etc. Is there the space equivilent to Rome: Total War?

Dune? Empire Earth 2
Well, not sure if you're into games that are like Civilization, but if you are..
Galactic Civilizations. Hands down, the best game out there. The AI is incredible, a massive tech tree, the ability to choose if you are evil, neutral, or good via moral dilemmas when you colonize new worlds. For instance..
When you colonize a new world, you find a primitive civilization, do you whipe them out, leave them be, or force reallocate them. All will have pros and cons to your planet and all will affect how the other races will view you.
Along with that, but you have R&D that is alignment specific (Terror Stars for evil people.. think death star) or the ability to empathise and get favorable results from other aliens (good ability). Not only that, but your UI changes based on alignment.
Anyway, the game is great. It already has an expansion pack coming out as well as a sequal. Well, done rambling about this one.

Wasn't there an Earth 2100 or 2150 game that came out a while ago? Almost Warcraft-ish?
Yes, but it was very average at best.

Oh.. if you want a VERY difficult RTS with a nice tech tree that is a bit non-conventional, give Homeworld and Homeworld II a try. Homeworld I you can get for about $10 since it's old, but Homeworld II is newer, better mechanics, and looks nicer.

Galactic Civilisations - can you describe this in more detail? I'm really after a turn based construction game, but with RT battles.

I was going to suggest this game. It is worth the buy as it has great sites and support and free updates constantly. I've played it countless hours. Space Empires IV used to get teh play time prior to Gal Civ coming out, might want to try that as well.
MOO3 SUCKS cox imho.

Okay, I'll give you a fast rundown on Galatic Civilizations. Not sure if you've ever played Civilization I, II, or III, but I'm going to assume you didn't since you had no idea what I was talking about.
Anyway, think of Master of Orion 2.. Kind of. You have a whole map of every galaxy of the universe, and each galaxy has planets. From Earth you can build a various amount of vessels. Starting with star fighters, a colonization pod, an exporation vessel, and that's really about it.
Anyway, you build the vessels you feel your civilization needs (human) and go explore the galaxy. As time progresses you get to choose research goals for your civilization. Want to do communications to create a translator to understand all the other alien races? Go for it. Wait! Who can trust those alien scum??? Let's research better armor for our ships! Wait.. Fuck that! I want better engines for vessels! The faster we explore the faster we can colonize! No.. To hell with that! We need better trade doctrine! That way we can rule the galaxy through commerce!
Anyway, the that is just the opening turn. It gets more and more indepth the further you get into the game (from better trade doctrines, to better ships, to better weapons.. all that). You can also tailor your civilization to your play style by choosing a political party such as the war party, the pacifists, to the industrialists, all with their own bonsus. Every so often you have a vote to see how well your party does. If you win, you keep your bonuses, if you loose, bye bye, bonuses.
Not only that, but before hand, you get to customize your civilization by spending X amount of points into certain attributes (starting out with the ability to make planets more hospitable to making your ships better fighters) all these cater to your play style.
Anyway, I can go on for days about the level of detail this game has. The AI is incredible and I really will bore everyone to death by giving EVERY detail away. As it stands.. The game is fun. There are no real time battles. Everything is done in a hidden formula of combat type of way. All turn based.. Closer to chess with a twist. Highly recommended.
If you can't find a torrent, head on over to www.galciv.com to download your copy or order it. It is definately well worth your time and it shouldn't be that expensive. Hope this helps.
