Am I the only one that can't stand when people do this - *hugs*
it drives me nuts in game and in Im's
An example from the amulet tonight
[Coralanna (subdued)]: "Oo. Cuttin' in on Adene's business now are ye? ~*Snicker*~
*Rubs you comfortingly* It's okay *Hugs*
*snicker*

I hate when people say *snickers.*
Just kidding! I had to say it! :saint:
But anyways, I DO hate when people use any action over the net in the game and such.

It doesn't bother me. You can mentally throw your thoughts out, but can't mentally throw out a chuckle? I use them sparingly though.
I do use ::hugs:: or some such a lot in IMs, but I try to only do that with other gamers. I try not to with my family
After using :: :: or * * to signify actions fpr so long with my gamer friends, I am finding it increasingly difficult to avoid doing it to my normal and family. I have to fight the over-powering urge to *Laugh* or *yawn* or *snicker*
My god... What have they done to me?

Oh, heh, that reminded me..
I have an old friend that I'll sometimes web cam with.
I'll type lol, or laugh, or snicker, or something in an IM, but have a dead-straight face.
I always got picked on for that.
What can I say... it's a talent to hide emotions on the outside when I'm laughing my butt off on the inside.

Actions in thoughts blow.

agreed.
This is probably the worst:
::flees::
Did you get up from you computer and run into the backyard for a minute? Good thing you escaped that situation.
I deal with it because an overwhelming amount of people do it in IMs, especially girls. I only use haha and lol and if i'm trying to be annoying, I use the ::action:: stuff ... it seems to annoy anyone, even the people who use it all the time.

I only do it with people who are gamers or from the boards while chatting in IMs. I don't speak that way with friends or family. I never did it in thoughts in the game though.
Although I've had friends that I've never gamed with online but used to play D&D with long ago, IM me with smiles and hugs and found it funny.
People are getting into doing that even when not online gamers to show reactions or feelings, even exaggerated ones for a laugh, such as flee. I find it funny when people do that and don't take it literally. I actually encourage it, because sometimes the smilies that come with IMs don't cut it, and the emote works just as well.

I know why people do it ... emoticons are just obnoxious, if you ask me.

So is assuming how someone feels just by words, and we know you can't get the sarcasm, joke or feeling through just words if not stated properly.

Hey, I know some people that will be talking with me...that will literally say "LOL" out loud, you know, like the letters.
My old manager at Petsmart used to do that and it drove me up the fucking wall.

That's a good point.

Did he say it after every response even if it wasn't funny and he wasn't laughing?

No, thank god. We were a bunch of goofballs there so it was quite amusing there most of the time.
I don't mind :action: as much as the whole !*~*~action~*!~*! Sorry, but if you HAVE to do an emote, stop being so damn invasive with the characters. The amunet isn't an AOL chatroom and we don't all need to find creative ways to express our actions.

As a gamer, I can safely say that being a gamer doesn't justify using it in IMs. I fucking hate it.

I agree, all those frillies around the word is much over the net in game. Hell, even in IM. If someone IMed me with that crap, i'd think they were demented.

I do that sometimes with one of my employees. We also say BRB to each other. I'm easily amused.

For the record, I never ever say out loud lol or wtf or anything like that. If I did, I would hit myself. That's just plain wrong people!
I really couldn't say w t f. I would have to stop and think about it. I can type it without thinking, but not say without thinking. Yanno?

Personally, IG, I am ok with any *actions* that are sound oriented such as snickers, laughs, cackles, etc. What chaps my ass is when people do hugs and crap. I always call them on it, and they are like o its to enrich the gaming enviroment ... Bull-Fucking-Shit! So, to save my sanity, I stay off the amulets as much as possible.
In IM's ... I honestly do not care. Of course I have found that some of my family don't understand say: HUG SMILE etc., I personally just think they are fucking retards that I have to explain it to ... "A *smile* is a smile ... DUH!"
Anyway ...
Have a GREAT Day all!
