View Full Version : Fucking Brits

Why do they capitalize on shitty stuff like "Wallace and Gromit" or "James and the Giant Peach" and ship that crap to the United States when they have pure genious like Ali G and Shaun of the Dead. Us Americans need more of the latter or something similiar.. Or at least I need the Brits here to recommend similiar comedies.

- Arkans

PS: I love how Ali G has humor, that if you actually have an understanding of other cultures, is piss your pants funny.

Wtf? The stuff you mentioned there is like 5 years old. I haven't seen an Ali G show in years. Most the stuff we produce you guys wouldn't get (such as a Bear's Tail, BrassEyed, Not the Nine O'Clock News, Alan Partridge, Big Train, Smack the Pony, Little Britain). If you liked Shaun of the Dead, you'd probably like Spaced. I'd probably call that my favourite show ever. No idea if the yanks will like it though (you'll probably make a shitty remake like the Office and Red Dwarf).

08-13-2005, 09:55 PM
Yeah, Ali G has just recently started coming on HBO and the like for us. There was one movie that he was in that was so fucking funny it hurt. Then there was a skit about the Eastern European guy trying to get a date that was so goddamn hilarious and here I thought Biritish humor sucked.

PS: Man, I think I'll buy some DVDs when I'm in London next week.

lol. That retarded timeframe is the equivilent of Friends premiering over here next week.

My comedy recommendations are:
Brasseyed - you political folks will love this. Not for the stupid, naive or inane.
Not the Nine O'clock News - same as above.
Big Train - Really weird and twisted.
Garth Marenghi's Dark Place - Sort of like the Office, but the setting is a 1980's sci-fi series. Really makes fun of stuff like the A-Team etc.
Spaced - Owns all.
Alan Partridge - This was the prototype for David Brent.
A Bear's Tail - Very twisted.
Little Britain - it's about Britain. I doubt you'll get much of it.
Black Books - Bill Bailey is the man.

You can download most.

Appreciate the titles, I'll be looking into them all. I love British humor now.. Except Wallace and Gromit and James and the Giant Peach.. They suck.. I don't even really like Monty Python.

- Arkans

StrayRogue

I wouldn't classify either of those as comedies.

Shaun of the Dead? It was mildly funny at best. Ali G I like, but hes with HBO I thought, not BBC.

We don’t get enough British stuff here with all our cable channels. PBS does BBC World every day twice a day which is great.

Now I have to ask, what do the Brits see thats American?

Tim Burton is extremely not British. And that movie is extremely fucked up because he directed it. Good fucked up though

The only good Ali G skit is that thing where he pretends to be Middle Eastern and then passes off those naked photos of his wife :lol2:

D Ali G gets mad interviewz. Thats the stuff I like. He is filming a new season and I heard he almost started a riot at an American rodeo. He was doing the Kazakstani guy or whatever and started the National Anthem with [paraphrase] I hope George Bush drinks the blood of every man woman and child in Iraq.

I was pissed at the US remake of The Office, it blew hard. The only bad thing about the original is that there were only two seasons, and UK seasons are freakin' short.

Get Spaced, seasons one and two Arkans.
I swear, that will crack you up.

Plus they should be damn cheap by now.
Also, you'd wish you had a friend exactly like the character of Mike.

OMG Garth Marenghi's Dark Place!! Seriously the funniest thing ever, It's just so abstract and funny. Far better than Ali G

Blacks Books is excellent, I love Dylan Moran! He was in shaun of the dead too I if I remember correctly.

Little Britain... You really have to be British to get it. I can't imagine non brits understanding the lovely Vicky Pollard.

Alan Partridge... Priceless. He's so cringe worthy, even more so than David Brent!

My Family.. Best sitcom we have produced in years. Robert Lindsay and Zoe Wanamaker are great together.

Auf Wiedersehen, Pet is great if you like Geordies.

Pheonix Nights & That Peter Kay Thing... You have to watch that those. Even better than The Office.

Game On also rocked big style in the 90's.

We get all the main comedies the American's get, Backlash. Friends, Fraiser, Cheers, Everybody Loves Raymond, Spin City and a load of new ones with gay people in it.

When I go to the gym early in the morning Everybody Love Raymond is always on. I never watched much of any American Television until I moved to London.

Since I haven't actually owned a working television since 1999, I really don't know much about whats on now.

But I've seen cool shows like Spaced, Red Dwarf, and Coupling on DVD. Spaced was awesome.

And for childrens programs, I like Bagpuss.

Emily's cat Bagpuss
The most Important
The most Beautiful
The most Magical
Saggy old cloth cat in the whole wide world

King of queens is usually on in the mornings too.

There's this period of time from about 8 am where all the best comedies are on channel 4 or 5 (?).
Sadly replaced by third watch and ER.
Which I love, don't get me wrong. . but it sucks all the joy and fun the comedy provided.
:)

OR you could take a peek at typical English culture by watching an animated show called ' Monkey Dust '.
It's a very adult comedy, but completely encapsulates the dark side of our way of life.

Monty Python is still the best thing to ever come out of England.

I mean that in a good way.

The Country that inflicts "Freinds" and the spin off with Joey, that stupid programme with Michael J Fox where he is working for the mayor or something. Saved by the Bell and other such rubbish HAS NO RIGHT TO CRITICISE EVEN THE WORST OF OUR SHIT.

Now fuck off and take your shitty programmes with you

Wait a minute. Do you mean to tell me that people actually exist that truly think Saved By the Bell is a good show? That has to be the stupidest, worst acted, worst written waste of a 30 minute time slot in the history of television (next to that show The Parkers)

It's almost like a low budget Beverly Hills 90210 (which also sucked major assholes) with a dash of boyband-ness. Screech could have been a cool character if the guy playing the role had any concept of what overacting was. He did have a boxing match with Horshack from Welcome Back Kotter (a truly awesome show) though, which was probably the highlight of his career.

Those 2 chicks were hot, but other than that it's the dumbest show ever. I think I'd rather watch an 8-hour Bob Saget marathon than watch one episode of Saved By the Bell.

Michael J. Fox is cool though. I only watched a couple episodes of Spin City, but his character seemed a lot like Alex P. Keaton (Family Ties), and Alex P. Keaton rocks.

You have no idea how much better I feel knowing that Bob Saget hated his own shows. For the longest time I thought he was the world's biggest vagina.

I wasn't even aware he used to do stand-up. I'll have to check that out sometime. Got a link to where I can find some? From all the (apparently limited) Bob Saget I've seen, the best thing he ever did was suck dick for coke.

No way. My point was that stepping into the ring with Horshack was probably the highlight of Screech's career.

I always saw Screech as a watered down, poorly acted, horribly written suburban ripoff of Horshack.

Or maybe it's just cause they somewhat look alike.

But no, Celebrity Boxing sucks too.

Saved By The Bell is a great show.

A girl who would make a good wife is still, to this day, refferred to as Kapowski.

Yeah man, that girl I went out with last night, she's Kapowski.

Can’t say much for American sit-coms in general. Seinfeld is probably the best since I Love Lucy. For other types of TV... there are so many reality/quai-reality shows on right now its sick. From Fear Factor to American Chopper. Some of them are good. Surreal Life, American Chopper. The hottest thing in American TV is HBO (SNL still rocks too), hands down. Can’t wait for Rome to start and yes I know its all British actors. Wonder how the Italians feel about that. Oh wait, not one single Italian TV series get exported. j/k

As for Brit TV, I mean, some of it is good, but other stuff is probably right on par with some of our most popular shows in terms of real talent or entertainment value. I was over there once and everyone said Oh its the greatest night for TV tonight you HAVE to watch this! And I did, and I was literally bored to tears. So bored that I went ahead and pointed out that the game show we were watching had a laugh track. There was no audience. My friends found it very hard to believe.

With as much stuff as everyone puts out, there is gold here and there. Red Dwarf was one of the best I’ve seen and of course Monty Python and Fawlty Towers.
