View Full Version : Merchanting Interactions. IC or OOC?

Divinity

Okay, as most of you all know I'm selling things. Of course, the exchange has to be made in the game.

So I get this chick, and her and I go back and forth about these items. Finally, we make a deal and I tell her tonight would be a good time.

So this is where it takes off of (In order of events.):

xxxx
: Ok I cant get away from this so I'll just log in a locker char to pick it up
xxxx: :mutter:
Lady Kurapira: :-) thanks
Lady Kurapira: lol
Lady Kurapira: yeah, i kinda get going too
Lady Kurapira: alright, you'll meet aurawyn first
Lady Kurapira: one west of the bank good?
Lady Kurapira: or a table? (which i would prefer)
xxxx: Whichever!
xxxx: Just gotta see if he's got the funds
Lady Kurapira: lol table it is
Lady Kurapira: thrak inn please
Lady Kurapira: ahh ok
Lady Kurapira: well aura is at a table when you're ready
xxxx: Heh, allright, got it. I hardly ever play him so he's usually short on silver

[Ferocious Thrak Table]
Wood chairs are pushed haphazardly against the long wooden table. A dagger with a carved bone hilt pins a dried-out apple to the table, providing an interesting centerpiece. A picture of a thrak baring its teeth is drawn in fading paint.
Obvious exits: out
sit

You pull out a chair and seat yourself at the table.
i
You are holding a pair of thin black ribbon wristlets in your right hand.
You are wearing a flawless sylvan linden bow, a hooded raven spidersilk cloak, a heart-shaped ruby locket, some embossed silvery grey leathers, a form-fitting blue-grey leather jacket embroidered with jade-hued leaves at the shoulders and wrists, some low-slung blue-grey leather pants overlaid with clingy leather featuring a jade-hued leaf design, a silver-laced black suede thigh-quiver, a thin crystal bar in her left eyebrow and some elven tracking boots.
Type INVENTORY HELP for more options.
psinet link
You mentally search for the PsiNet.

You feel at full magical power again.

* Sumpter just bit the dust!

You see Crimsonscar waving at your table, clearly hoping that you will invite him to sit with you. If you would like, you may INVITE Crimsonscar to allow him to join you.

* Agaric just bit the dust!
invite crimson

You wave at Crimsonscar and invite him to come sit with you.

Lady Kurapira: crimsonscar i take it?
Lady Kurapira: ?

Crimsonscar arrives at your table.

Crimsonscar bows to you.
greet crimson
You nod to Crimsonscar in greeting.

Crimsonscar kisses you on the hand.

Crimsonscar grins drunkenly.
stare crimson
You stare at Crimsonscar.

* Cladeth just bit the dust!

Crimsonscar hiccups!

Crimsonscar asks, "Wha'?"
'be glad there are wooden floors blockading the vine that would surely strike you right now.
You quietly say, "Be glad there are wooden floors blockading the vine that would surely strike you right now."
smirk
You smirk.

* Soulstar just bit the dust!

Crimsonscar says, "Feh."

Crimsonscar appears to be ignoring everything going on around him.
squint aura
You narrow your eyes.

Crimsonscar says, "Sucha perty lady wit' s'bad a way o' speakin'."
act rubs her hand off.
(Aurawyn rubs her hand off.)

The buzz of thoughts in your mind subsides.

Crimsonscar hiccups!
stand

You scoot your chair back and stand up.
'did you need something..?
You quietly ask, "Did you need something..?"
rub bar
You raise an eyebrow, your crystal bar only enhancing your skeptical look.
'as I thought
You quietly say, "As I thought."
out
[Raging Thrak Inn, Dining Room]

xxxx: Yep, that's me, from Shimmerain's 'Shut up Fuckhead' log..
xxxx: lol
Lady Kurapira: whaa?
xxxx: From the boards, yes, Crimmy is mine
xxxx:  I thought everyone'd read that
Lady Kurapira: and the reason for this ic interactions is because..?
Lady Kurapira: i read it, just don't remember it.
xxxx: Oh I was just messing around. Sorry. Sheesh.
Lady Kurapira: heh, i take rp'ing seriously
xxxx: I usually try to stay IC.
Lady Kurapira: i didn't appreciate it, since this is suppost to be ooc
Lady Kurapira: yes, but this arrangement was not made ic
Lady Kurapira: i've never done this before, and i hate to say this, but i'm going to have to decline the merchant offer now.
Lady Kurapira: sorry for the trouble.
Lady Kurapira: have a good night.
xxxx: Erm.
xxxx: Heh. I can get someone else for you if you need it.
Lady Kurapira: no, it's not your characters i have an issue with now. it is you.
Lady Kurapira: good night.
xxxx: my apologies.

Ok, so what.. the hell? :?:

You make an ooc arrangement, and you do the exchange.. it's still OOC. Right? Am I wrong?

If I'm wrong, I need to know how to handle it in the future because I'm not used to taking OOC into the game and it's all kinda weird.

"Oh hey! Well lucky you're here! I just so happen to have some items I think you want and you so happen to have the note for the same amount of silvers I would be asking for."

Edited because I forgot a bracket and got the quotes all funky.

I usually try to handle my interactions as a combination of both.
It's a sticky situation anyway, so I act like it's a amunet purchase for the most part :)

Y'know I could be immature... go true PC boards style and ream your ass, pointing out how silly that was...

But instead I'll just say.. I was simply doing what I've always done, staying true to my characters to the best of my abilities given a situation.. I didn't even want to log that character in, but since I was otherwise occupied, I was trying to do what I could to pick those things up. Trying to make you happy, but apparently THAT backfired..

And if you had waited for two seconds.. You would have seen Crimmy say something like "M'lady frien' sent me tah pick somethin' up from ye"... But his accent is hard to type, and I was distracted... I was slow. So sue me.

It's your decision whether or not you sell to someone, but damn. Chill the fuck out.

"Lady Kurapira: no, it's not your characters i have an issue with now. it is you. "

I always have a character that isn't really known deliver. No need to put people through having to deal with Teeoncy if they don't like her IC.

By the way Sarah, that log's pretty funny.

Did he expect this:

OMG! You're THE crimsonscar!? NO WAY! I READ ABOUT YOU IN THE SHUT UP FUCKHEAD LOG!

?

Especially considering he had such a memorable part.

Oooh. I assumed he was implying that I went Teeoncy-ish and made a new name. Heh.

Nah, this is my first registration here at PC. Hello everyone. Warm welcomes abound.. :D

And no hard feelings, eh, Kurapira? I just don't understand what there was to get so upset about. People do things differently, and I simply did things the way I always have. Never had a problem before, probably never will again.

Aww Kainen. It's hard to distinguish around here who is male and who is female (and then who acts the opposite gender). I still get mixed up at times, so I try to keep it gender neutral when I don't know.

Regarding the exchange, I think you overreacted. The buyer left ooc in IMs, and did ic for the pickup. I see absolutely nothing wrong with this. Maybe you should give a warning in IMs that you don't wish to rp the exchange.

Kurapira is a dickhead.
Always has been
Always will be.

If Crimsonwhatsit had been all "Hey thanks for the IM, wait a sec I just need to take the dog for a walk" kind of thing, she would have been posting about how OOC he was.

For someone that holds themself up as such a fucking shining example of Golden Roleplay, you really are a dick. Roleplay it out. Dont spit your dummy out and post here about how the nasty person was mean to you, because quite frankly, the biggest dickhead in your log is you.

Kainen, I thought Artha was a girl until last week and I'm not kidding.

I don't really know how to run merchant exchanges, but even on the amunet it's pretty ooc. I don't know. Do what you like, I suppose.

08-11-2005, 06:45 AM
Yeah, do what you like to do. But you should warn people in IM, "Hey keep this short and fast I have other things to do etc"

But maybe worded differently.

Usually I'll smile, curtsey, maybe ask how their night is but then I get outta there. If they want to RP more, I'll stick around.

Divinity
08-11-2005, 01:24 PM
Uhm.. firstly, I wasn't going off about how they were mean to me. They weren't mean.

Secondly, Kurapira wasn't doing the transaction or even in the game. Aurawyn was there doing the transaction.

Thirdly, if you go back and forth oocly about how you're going to buy something from ME (not my character) and how you will meet ME (not my character) then you would be making an ooc transaction with ME (not my character) in the game.

Also, I wasn't going off. I wasn't mad. Just really confused and a bit frustrated by it.

Thing is, in IMs she didn't tell me who to expect. So when I had Aura logged in waiting for her character to show up, this person comes to her table, and there they are. Then they randomly kiss her hand, which Aura is very withdrawn and doesn't like that thing. So when that happened on the inviting, I asked if it was her character.. she didn't respond until AFTER all that stuff went down IG and Aura had walked away.

That, and I didn't have other things to do at the time, so I didn't feel a warning was needed. I've never had a problem in the past going in there, making the transaction and moving on.

Since I considered and was expecting the transaction to be OOC, if they said something OOC out loud or in whispers or whatever at that time, I wouldn't have thought anything of it. My mentality going in there that it was completely just that.. OOC.

::shrugs:: I don't think I'm the end all be all of RP. I do take it seriously, doesn't mean that I critique everyone else and all this stuff. I used to, in the past I was expecting everyone to RP like me. That was a LONG time ago.

Eh, if what I posted and the way my character acted in the log makes me a dick.. so be it. Although, the topic and reasoning for the thread was not "Roast of Divinity and/or Aurawyn." ;)

Kurapira is entirely in the wrong on this. I can see you denying service because you simply want to. That's your choice, sell to whoever you want. Don't try to justify it with "HE KISSED MY HAND THAT MOTHERFUCKER I WAS TRYING TO KEEP THIS OOC BUT HE TRIED TO INTERACT WITH ME WITH ACTIONS IN THE GAME."

WTF? No it doesn't. You didn't sell an item to someone because they attempted small RP in what you call an OOC situation. My logic is spot-on. I didn't say it had anything to do with someone you don't like. Your reading comprehension fails, Div.

I think it was more my interpretation from the post. The quote you made with big caps read to me, like.. He RP'ed and it was such a big freaking deal that I hate this mofo and won't sell to him.

I wouldn't not sell to someone because of my RP'ed interactions with them.

Again.. Teeoncy comes to mind as an example. I'm sure I can name a few others, but we all know who she is without a doubt.

I don't know... does kinda seem like you made a big deal about nothing. My bard used to do a lot of merchanting, and she had all kinda of interactions with buyers and sellers. Some tried to keep it in character (to the extent possible--it is a little artificial when you make the arrangements out of the game), and others just whispered comments to her OOC. As a merchant, she just goes with the flow, unless things become really inappropriate, in the interest of having good relations with customers.

Of course, you were well within your rights--it's your stuff, you can sell to whomever you want and set the terms of the exchange. But if you're asking what's normal for merchanting (IC or OOC), I'd say just about anything goes. I'm not sure how it's in your interest to refuse a sale (over a minor etiquette issue), given that it takes your time and energy to find a new buyer.

Drezzt

What I've learned is this, and you can take it for what it's worth:

If you want to sell something
And you have a buyer
Who loses if you don't sell it to them?
You both do.
You're stuck with your stuff and no money,
They're stuck with money and no stuff.
Plus they badmouth you all over the place. (sometimes)

In that position I'da sold it and been happy. I can always wash my hands.

I can only assume that was in reference to Nien calling you Kurapira. I know that you’ve changed your GS character, that you’ve changed your posting name, and that supposedly you’ve changed.

Some people want to give you a clean slate and that’s their right. More power to them for doing it. Some of us are going to remember that you’re a crazy bitch. While forgiveness can be considered virtuous, I don’t feel any moral obligation to do so in your case. Remember people hate you because of things that you did of your own free will. In the real world there’s these things called consequences. Sometimes they can be permanent.

You constantly said hateful things about others, you lied religiously, and generally acted like a spoiled brat when things didn’t go exactly your way. Just another day by the looks of that log.

Let's just say for shits and giggles, it was Teeoncy..Wow, way to treat a customer. (Didn’t you say something about, I no long have issues with your characters, I have issues with you)

Teeoncy has never even bought anything from you so how do you know she is a bad customer? You can either sell to everyone totally OOC not caring who they are, or you can refuse service to those who hate, insult them, and lose money.

Even if I totally hate someone, their money isn’t of any lesser quality then someone else’s.

Also, you say you rp your characters to be withdrawn etc…if you considered it OOC, why did your character RP all bitchy and pissed? Why not ignore it, hand him his item, take the money, say, "Thank you." or "Hope to do business with you again!"

If you are doing it OOC, then Teeoncy's name shouldn't even be brought up. You should be oblivious to the fact that you hate her. But then you assumed that it would be her.

(I don't even remember having any interaction with you in the game actually. Unless it was a character I did not know of. Which, wouldn't surprise me since I only knew about Kurapira.)

Divinity mentioned that she didn't know Crimsonscar was the actual buyer until after he started a bunch of the rping with her at the table.

But... Divinity, you shouldn't be playing the victim here either. Get the character's name in the IM before you tell them where you are. Uhh, don't wave to someone you don't know??

A little common sense goes a long way.

The thing is though... It wasn't a bunch of RP.... I think I said two things and did three actions in the matter of a minute.. Then I was distracted for about 15 seconds, and by the time I looked back down at the screen, she'd already had her freak out session and left. :sniffle:

Honestly, he's just a nice guy. *I* as a player assume that if people don't want their hands kissed.. they will utilize DEMEANOR RESERVED OR COLD. I think I even checked her demeanor before I had em kiss her. heh.

I also replied and told her that yes, it was me, before the invite.

If you still want to sell me those things I can send another character. :D

Unless your issue.... is still... with me..

"Uhm, I denied the service because it was completely retarded"

So, the entire thing was "completely retarded" because a character showed up acting.. jeez.. IN-character and kissed your hand? How can you NOT see what's wrong with this? Nearly everyone I've met has seen AIM or any other OOC interaction as an extension of the game (in the merchanting aspect, because they wouldn't have seen/bought your item if not for the OOC venue), because the game is very limited in that kind of way. Guess what? If you are so disgusted with people that you don't want them to kiss your hand, then turn on the damn cold demeanor. If you don't, then it's clear you only let people do it, and then react negatively, for the drama.

You are a merchant. You have an OOC website that sells in-game items. You collect silvers in-game. Go post a disclaimer on your site if you don't want people to roleplay even three sentences with you at a PRIVATE THRAK TABLE.

edit: Oh, and how could I forget the obvious. Have you visited your own website even? The damn thing tries to be as in-game as in-game could be on that front page.
