Emergency Shuttle Repair Mission a Success

SPACE CENTER, Houston — A spacewalking astronaut gently pulled two potentially dangerous strips of protruding filler from Discovery's tile belly with his gloved hand Wednesday, successfully completing an unprecedented emergency repair.

Astronaut Stephen Robinson said both pieces came out easily during the spacewalk, which lasted six hours. He did not have to use a makeshift hacksaw put together in orbit that he brought along just in case.

"That came out very easily, probably even less force," Robinson said of the second piece. "I don't see any more gap filler. ... I'm doing my own inspection here. It is a very nice orbital belly."

I love that the hacksaw was made with duct tape.....how much did that friggin thing cost to build? How many billions?

And they are doing repairs with duct tape......priceless.

It's better than licking it and then putting chewed gum on it. NASA has come a long way.

Anyway, the saw was made from pieces in the shuttle they had to put together. They didn't board with a saw like that. Its funny how they have to come up with this stuff on the fly.

Duct tape just earned a ton of advertising because of this. I know I'm going to buy a roll when I get off work today.

Why not? It holds spaceships together.

I remember reading in my 10th grade bio book about methods of birth control. Pulling out's major drawback was that it's unpredictable and causes frustration.
