...and am officially a yuppie. I got my first REAL job offer for after graduation today at my internship. Mediocre pay and sign on bonus, but huge opportunities to advance.

I'm going to be a dispute analyst/consultant. My parents will be heartbroken now that I've completely buried any hope they had of all their children having doctorates.

I'm not going into auditing, so hopefully I won't experience the burnout that 35% of all Big 4 workers do...

Please do a collective analysis and tell me the top-secret behind making my checking account have "000" added onto the end of it, as well as making my bills disappear without actually setting fire to them.

Congratulations, Edaarin.

I pity you and fart in your general direction.

Sorry, it's habitual around yuppies, nothing personal intended.

Good for you, hon. You've got to do what makes you happy. Your parents are responsible for making their own happiness.

Maybe you'll decide to return for further education at a later date. At least, for now, I hope you enjoy this job. :)

Doctorates are for sissies. Way to be with a career in finance.

Yeah because fat people are desperate and have to pay for sex. Is it true that all asian men have little dicks Edaarin?

Congrats, perhaps that job might do more for you than just provide you with cash.

It's a quote from Family Guy.

And no, only the ones that grow up in Asia. Malnourishment and what not.

Well, the job offer got rescinded today.

The partner in charge of my last engagement had a pretty scathing review about my work ethic as well as the fact that I didn't appear to be enjoying my work.

I got in at 7:45 every morning (45 minutes earlier than I'm supposed to), I worked through lunch 1/2 the time, and I took two 15 minute breaks throughout the day. I guess he reached that conclusion by the fact that I was out the door by 5:20 instead of 5:30.

I didn't look like I enjoyed my work. I locked myself in an 8' x 8' room in order to stick a Bates stamp on 24,000 pages of documents and create indices for 63 binders. It's hard to be enthusiastic about doing work that's supposed to be done by a paralegal.

Fucking hell I'm disappointed. I don't take failure well. This also means that the ONE week of vacation I had (the company flies everyone who receives an offer for a paid week at Disneyworld, along with about $300 in Disney Dollars) is now kaput.

I'm incredibly distraught and frustrated right now.

Oh, Edaarin, I'm sorry. It's always a disappointment when you're looking forward to something and it doesn't turn out. However, you have to keep in mind that there just might be something better waiting just around the bend.

Keep your head up, hon. This wasn't the right thing for you, apparently.

To add insult to injury, I have to go back to the office tomorrow morning to return the company laptop bag. The fucking thing costs like $30.

At least I have a computer for another night...

They'll be sorry.

I swear it.

EDIT: The above is not a physical threat, but a promise in the sense that 10 years from now they will wish they hadn't fucked with me.

You did your best to be a good employee. They weren't able to appreciate the effort. It's their loss, hon. You're right. Good employees who arrive on time and get their work done correctly aren't all that easy to find.

Looks like it wasn't meant to be.

Who knows, you could've been in a horrible position there...

That's just the way I look at it. I doubt you'll have a tough time finding a new job with how you did in school.

I'm so sorry man.

That's just terrible. It's bad enough not getting the job, but then you have to tell everyone that you told in the first place that it's now a "no go". Just shitty all around.

Don't be too down on yourself. You might think it's trite for me to say this, but you still have a lot. You have the internship experience, which a lot of people don't have. You have an entire school year to find a job as well. On campus interviewing will be a positive experience... you'll get to meet a lot of people, and hear the schtick from a lot of different companies. Interviews help you sell yourself, so do it as much as you can even if you would never take the job, or feel they would never take you.

(Note: This rule does not apply to Vector Knives, or any other door to door bullshit scam. Stab them in the ass with those things that hold the corn on the cob...)

Intern work is never glamorous. Ever. There was a really good article in the Wall Street Journal about this a month ago. It's shit work,... it's much more to see if you will be a good "fit" for the place.

It's tough, but you have to fake it. It's a right of passage thing. A lot of really smart people don't succeed in the work place because of this- they expect to be challenged all the time. It just doesn't happen.

I started my job, and one of the first tasks I had to do was reorganize their files. "Furious" was a fucking understatement... This was not paralegal work... this was temp work. I had just finished applying to two of the top business schools in the country, and I was figuring out what needed to be hauled to a dusty basement.

I didn't let anyone know how bad it sucked though. I found a way to do it better than they were before, and my coworkers were very appreciative.

It's only been a couple of months since this, but I'm now putting the finishing touches on a three million dollar deal. Sometimes, you just have to fake it... if I had bitched about the files, I don't think I would have been given the level of responsibility I quickly received. Shit, I might not have been hired on at all.

Here's my real point... there are going to be lots of people that can "do" accounting or auditing as well as you can. Your bosses are going to want to work with people that they feel good being around. If you have the same hobby, or a good demeanor, you're doing well. If you look pissed off because of your work...? Well, you're making it unnecessarily hard on yourself. Are you going to have to fake it at times? Sure. If you can't deal with this, then the corporate world is not for you. Be happy you learned this at 20.

I had a disasterous internship once... I'm not saying yours was a disaster, but I will say for me it was a definite learning experience. That's all you can do at this point is learn what to do differently.

You can't take things personally. Much like the letter you crafted to your professor when you were pissed off, don't let things get under your skin. So, as much as you wan't to "make them pay", when you go in there tomorrow, just be professional. The last thing you want to do is burn bridges.

It's perfectly fine to be fired up to "make them pay", but just remember to be professional. It counts for a lot.

I'm fully confident that you'll have a good job by the time you graduate. You may even find something that interests you more.

Edaarin sorry to hear it. Unemployment rate nationally is 5% and 240, 000 new jobs were created last month so I am sure a new job is around the corner.

The Big 4 accounting firms aren't bad to work for and are great springboards for a career. Also doing your CPA will only enhance your career.
