Basically I'm buying a new PC, wanna keep both PCs up and running online. I have moved 2 times and lost my setup CD and manual for websetup up. And I can't seem to find anything on the web...

It's a Linksys ReadyFast cable/DSL router(not wireless). I have tried using the site http://192.168.1.1 but it doesn't seem to load. Anyone know what I could do?

Make sure your PC is plugged into the router.
On Windows 2k/XP, click start then run. In the dialog box that appears, type in cmd. This will bring up a dos screen. At that screen type in ipconfig and press enter. The address listed under default gateway there should be the web address for management.

Also, Linksys routers have a tiny reset button on the back that if you press and hold it for about 10 seconds will restore it to factory defaults.

Awesome, so this should get me to the websetup page(admin page if I remember correctly)?

So it works for your old machine, but when the new machine is hooked up, you get nothing?

To find out what the address of the router is, on the machine where everything works, drop to a command prompt and type "ipconfig". The adress of the Default Gateway is your router.

Also make sure your new machine can talk to the router... Drop to a command prompt and type "ipconfig". If the number is 192.168.something.something, than your PC had found the router and obtained an address from it. If it is 0.0.0.0 or 169.254.something.something, it was unable to get an address from the router.

[Edited to add: D'oh, I was too slow!]

Well, I'm not home yet, but will try this ASAP. I forgot to mention, that I had formated my PC so, neither computer recognizes the router and has no cable connection. I use to do this for FFXI on the PS2 and had no problems at all. But thanks again! Will check when i'm home...

On a whim I decided to check into my DSL modem they sent me which (by their direction) replaces a home router since it has a few ports, but I'm look at the firewall and this is what they consider to be High security setting:
Blocks all outgoing traffic except Mail, News, Web, FTP, and IPSEC

Now who can spot the inherent flaw with that security?

Hint: Its supposed to block whats *outside* from coming in. Blocking inside from going out is called prison.

This is also wireless, and its on by default and an open system as well. Pretty stupid defaults in my opinion. Guess I should get off my lazy ass and reconnect my real router.
