NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Microsoft announced Friday that it will call its next-generation operating system "Windows Vista."

The much-anticipated operating system had formerly been code-named "Longhorn."

Microsoft also unveiled the Windows Vista Web (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/default.mspx) site and said the first beta test version of the system, which will be targeted at developers and IT professionals, will be available by Aug. 3. The system is scheduled to be released late next year.

I've heard it's not worth changing to. That was a while ago. I like the name vista much better than Longhorn.

Agreed, I could never have anything in my house named 'Longhorn'.

I still have one machine that acts primarily as a data storage unit that runs 98.

I'm KIDDING of course.. hahah. ME is the WORST WIN platform operating system evah in my opinion. More of a reference to all the idiots that rushed out to install ME when it was released only to revert back to 98 a week later. Started the trend of "waiting" 6 months or longer before installing any window release or windows update.

I'd spose I like Longhorn over Vista.. Vista sounds too ..I dunno .. wellington?

I prefer Dos 5.2 with the Hot Coffee mod myself.

Hey,

Dos 5.x with dosshell was the shiznit.

I remember when WIN 3.1 came out, and thought, damn all these floppy disks are a bitch to load. That was on my old 80286 running at a whopping 12 mghz. The scary thing was that this was NOT my first computer.

I'm still pissed they stopped using the codename Whidbey... that's so much cooler than VS2k5.

I was so happy when mom upgraded our PC. It showed the processing speed in a digital LCD on the front of the PC and had a "Turbo" button.

If you turned off the turbo button the Mhz dropped from 25 to 12.

I remember those. Sort of made me wonder why they didn't just set the computer in turbo mode all the time.

my first computer:

AN 80286 12 (with a VGA card - no wimpy CGA or EGA card for us!)
40 mb HD, 5.25" drive, and a whopping 1 MB OF RAM!!!11!!
(oh, and a 1200 baud external modem, later upgraded to a 2400, and then finally a 14.4!!!)

it all ran on MS-DOS 3.0!!

Heh... ever leave it on turbo on a hot summer day in a house without air conditioning? I guess power consumption too, they didnt have those "Power saving" monitors and stuff (granted the CPUs didn't have 130W thermal envelopes back then...)

I still have an AT&T laptop.

25mhz, 4mb RAM, color screen

It ran GS3. PCMCIA Network adapter, downloads were hindered by the slow speed of the hard drive.

Later I won an E-bay auction for more ram (to bump me up to 12mb total) and the guy threw in a 75mhz processor replacement (uber).

If only the replacement battery wasn't close to $100 I could unplug it from the wall and have it be useful.

My first decent computer next to the famed C-64 was a Tandy 1000SL baby! Blazing at 1200baud I ruled the BBS! I remember when I spent $300 to get my first 14.4.. changed Tradewars forever! Seriously.. Bards Tale ran like a dream on that Tandy.. ahh memories.

Xyelin, your post just made me start cracking up... for some reason Bards Tale made me think of Peasants Quest...

One I got my 75mhz computer I ran my own BBS for a while. Had all kinds of playable games that kept score and such online.

One phone line - so I restricted my users (friends) to 20 minutes every few hours, so that everyone could have a turn posting messages, playing games, and downloading the tiny ass text files of haxor information.

To be honest I loved the BBS days and the games were rather entertaining.. especially when played amongst a group of friends.

Had the same computer and was looking for a dungeon line game I used to play on it as a kid after reading this thread initially. -Couldn't find it and ended stumbling over a link to leisure suit larry on the game board I was viewing and laughing at the memory of someone bringing it in in early middle school.

First computer here was a TI99-4A. No hard drive, used a tape recorder with cables and a cassette tape to store my programs I made via numberline basic.

Then I graduated to an Apple 2e+ with 2 five inch floppys and the green monochrome screen. Thats when I first started playing Wizardry and Bards Tale (circa 1985). It was the shiznit.

Then the 80286 with the turbo button that took it from 8 to 12 and a 4mgb HD. Then an 486sx 25mghz with the high speed 28.8kbps modem.

And the list just skyrockets from there, thank god technology gets cheaper as time wears on.

I can't connect to the Inet because there are no internet connections in Iraq for me to connect to. There is only the public computers.

I liked ME because I prefered knowing wtf was going on with my computer rather than have XP do everything for me. When I was forced into using XP, I decided I liked not having to do everything and loved XP's automatic problem solving.

Hopefully Vista won't suck as much as the name suggests.
