My work is buying me a digital camera. I need to pick it out. The one suggested by our IT department is the Nikon Coolpix 5000. Any comments/suggestions?

We have a Nikon CoolPix 4500 at work, and I prefer the shots from my own Canon Digital Elph.

From everyone that I've talked to that has digital camera...Canon is always the best.

Canon Rebel or Canon 20D (about 600 - 800$ for the rebel) and (about 1200 - 1500 for the 20d).

That's if you're going to be taking some heavy duty photography..

what do you need the camera for?

It's nothing, pictures of facility inspections and stuff.

IT said they recommended it "because you can mount an external flash unit that will allow better pictures in shady/dark locations. The built in flash is only effective for pictures at close proximity."

I think it looks bulky and ugly.

Ok, well, you need to determine what you're going to be doing with the final pictures and how detailed the photos need to be. If you get a camera with a shoddy lens, which most cameras under 500$ have, and the megapixels are less than 6.0, then don't expect print quality photos.

This is especially true if you need detailed shots of key parts of the machines. Also, in a addition to a camera, you're going to need a tripod. (you can get a functional one for 90 - 150$)

Yeah, I just compared the Canon Rebel XT to the Nikon Coolpix 5000.

The rebel > the coolpix and costs roughly the same (depending on how good your purchasers are). I would also add that the rebel has a flash mounted on it already. Finally, you're definitely going to want a tripod to avoid blurry photos under low lighting conditions (which sometimes can't be avoided).

I've got the canon elph too (though it's almost 3 years old now). Still takes awesome pictures and is easy to learn.
